Default shifter question

I had my H22 swap in my Eg done at the end of July. The papers said that it had 33,000 miles on the motor. When the swap was done we took it for a test drive. 3rd grinds and the shifter feels kinda wierd. Now that could just be cause of me not being used to it. My car was a auto converted to stick. When i went to put the console over the shifter.... the console couldn't fit. The shifter was too far forward..... I am pretty mechanically inclined so I was thinking maybe i could just unbolt the shifter plate and move it back some. Would that be a good idea or will i do more harm than good?

EDIT: I read that there are shifter adapters for my car... who makes them? I tried looking for "place racing" couldn't find it.
