Civic EX/ITR hybrid vs Z28.....
This afternoon I went to visit my friend who works at a local imports performance store. He had just gotten his tranny rebuilt in his hybrid Civic EX/ITR.
Here is a quick rundown of the mods:
1998 Civic EX with a complete ITR drivetrain transplant with motor, tranny, LSD, computer, 5-lug hubs, FPR, 4-1 header, Greddy exhaust, complete Prothane bushing and motor mount kit, Tokiko struts, Eibach springs, Paradas, and a slew of other add-ons that I couldn’t even begin to list. But the important point is this: it is all-motor. No nitrous, no turbo.
Back to the story:
His ITR tranny decided to grenade on him a few weeks ago, and he was waiting for some replacement parts from Japan to arrive. They did, and the tranny was rebuilt by an ASE mechanic at the local Acura dealership. He also took the lightened flywheel out and put back in a factory ITR flywheel and a Clutch Masters stage 3 clutch.
So here we are heading to Taco Hell to pick up some lunch to take back to the shop. We stop at a light next to a mean sounding late model Z28. It had some kinda aftermarket exhaust that looked rather tight and sounded even better. Driving was a mid-to-late 50’s man with a much younger looking female riding shotgun.
Now Harold and I were just sitting there minding our own business. Sitting on the opposite side of the light was an acquaintance that Harold and I had not seen in a while, so Harold waves just as the light turned green.
The Z28 drops the hammer, lights up the rear and away he went. Harold was not really paying attention to him and it took a couple seconds for him to register that old dude wanted some!!
By the time Harold realizes what has just transpired, the Z28 was letting off the gas about 8-10 cars ahead. Harold had gotten up to about 45 at a meager pace and was now in 3rd gear. Harold then decided to throw reason out the window and show the old dude what was up.
Drop to 2nd and a long chirp later we are cooking. Top out second, and quick shift to third. Another LOOOONNNGGGG chirp. I was impressed at this point. Not too many cars around here do THAT.
Now the Z28 owner has realized we have engaged. He does a quick downshift and buries the pedal really opening it up now. Damn that exhaust sounds sweet. But it is getting hard to hear with a free-flowing ITR motor heading north of 8500rpm right in front of you.
Just as we get to the rear bumper of the Z, Harold shifts to 4th. ANOTHER decent chirp!! First time I had ever been in a car that chirped 4th at speed!! We pull right by the driver’s window and I get the most beautiful view of a brunette in the passenger seat, staring at us with wide eyes and a dropped jaw. I smiled and waived. The driver finally steals a look and I can tell he is rather pissed.
All through 4th we walk him until we are a car and a 1/2 ahead.
As we near redline once again, I quickly exclaim to Harold how impressed I was with the chirping of 4th. He says ‘Really? Watch this.’
At redline he shifted into 5th and once again the tires broke traction. Although it was a rather short protest from the tires, it was definitely audible to myself and no doubt to the incredulous Z28 owner.
Coming rather rapidly to the turn-in to the shop, Harold hit the brakes hard. I once again waived to the Z28, whose owner seemed to try to ignore us.
Cliff notes: Went to get some lunch with the owner of a Civic/ITR hybrid. Walked down a Z28 while chirping all FIVE gears.

How much $$$ do you have to put in a Civic to make it run like that?
I read an "Us vs Them" in a car craft at a friends house. One of the qoute said something like:
US (car crafter V8 crowd) spend $2000 to get our stock Z28 in the 11's
Them (imports) spend $10,000 to get a Civic in the 12's.
BTW, Car Craft thinks everyone that drives an import is a "ricer" I don't care for CC very much.

Another one of the qoutes was:
US - 350 lbft of torque at 3200 rpm
Them - 50 lbft of torque at 35000 rpm (yes 35K)
That's sort of humorous
I didn't get offended by it, I like both. I'm just curious what it cost to make the civic in the original post go that fast. BTW, I'd have loved to see the old guys face!

Got a pic of the engine bay? Is it a B18C5? If so, do you have the VIN # off the wrecked ITR it came out of?

Re: Civic EX/ITR hybrid vs Z28..... (Hammer)
Hey:
No flame intended, but this sounds a lot like a 'ricer fly-by' to me.
He goes, slows down, you drop the hammer from 8 cars behind and then get a car and a half in front of him. You win? It isn't a kill if he has his brakes on.
A buddy of mine has a *stock* '98 Z28 that ran 13.21 on street tires last Sunday. Only modification is a subwoofer box. Oh, and its an automatic.
If Harold beat him (while Harold had a passenger no less, I don't think he was racing.)
Also, driving like that on the street makes us all look bad.
