Default chipped ecu help

long story short:

im going uberdata. took my ecu out to look at where i need to put the socket in. found out my ecu was already chipped. took the chip out to take some pics. put the chip bck in. put the ecu back in the car. car runs like ****.

at idle the car revs between 1000-1200 rpm's.

also the car wont go past 3k, its like the fuel cut in now ta 3k.

car ran fine before. i put in a different ecu and the car runs fine. so something effected the ecu when the chip was taken out.

what could it have been?

check your pins if you're not careful they will bend, also you could have damaged it by ESD if you didn't ground yourself before removing/installing.

if you install the chip backwards you could have damaged the ecu...

Those proms are VERY ESD sensitive (as my friends and I have come to find out) more then likely you fried the chip due to improper grounding of yourself. I highly doubt you fried the ECU, my money is on a roasted chip.

what is this improper ground of myself?

you guys will probably laugh at this but..... i did use a very small flat head to get the chip up a little so i could grab it.

could you please go over the graounding you guys are talking about.

im new to all this stuff, but id like to learn

Well, its basic electronics really. You need to have proper grounding of yourself before handling any ESD (electo static discharge) sensitive devices (such as the prom you were handling). All it takes is a small amount of electricity to fry chips like those. A really rudimentary, but sometimes effective, way of grounding yourself while handling electronics would be to grab your cars chassis before touching the chip and keeping in contact with the car while handling the chip. The best way is to have an ESD strap attached to yourself. And using that screw driver isnt the best way to remove chips either, there is too much room for bending chip legs. The proper way would be to have a chip puller handy and using that. But, your biggest thing is ESD, gotta keep yourself grounded when handling those things. They dont always burn out that way, but sometimes they do.

so if you bend the prongs at all then the chip is effed?

because i did bend them when i pulled it out, but i figured, again due to my lack of knowledge with electronics, that as long and i straitened them out and got them back in the socket it would be fine.

thats probably not correct huh?

Oh no no no no, im not saying if you bend the legs that the chip will be done. No, im just saying that when you use a screw driver you are doing one side at a time, and you run the risk of bending the legs too much, so much, that if you were to bend them back you could break them off.

My main point was your ESD handling. You gotta be careful about that stuff.

or, if you used a magnetic screwdriver to remove the chip, that can screw up an electronic piece of equipment as well
