Default ECU Chipping and ROM burning

Hey all, I was just reading on ecu chipping, and rom burning and that such.
I just had some questions on it all.

What exactly is ECU chipping? is that socketing the ECU? or actually putting on a chip? I read from some site talking about ecu chipping that
"Here you can see a chipped P28 ECU. The person who chipped it used a socket for the 74HC373 as well as for the ROM socket,..."

chipped it using a socket, AND ROM socket...

I thought chipping was putting an eprom on it??

Also, is the eprom the same thing as those little sim cards? or is it more of an IC(integrated circuit)??

Would any eprom burner fit with the eprom chips that are to be sued in ecu chipping?

Is ecu chipping the term for putting an eprom on an ecu?

Any links would be helpful as I'm always down for reading. I hope to learn some engine management tuning tips from all of this as well as do my own chipping. Thanks in advance!
