It takes about an hour to get a bar sticker and the smog ref's look everything over.
The JDM's are supposed to pass smog as long as all smog equipment is hooked up. and the engine is same year or newer.

Jeff,

Just out of curiosity, how many times are you going to brag about your Bar sticker?

Jeff652,

picture is nice, but can you give us some of what you've gone through. Talked to a ref today and he said that if my motor is OBD2, all of the emission components should be OBD2 as well. i.e. ECU, Evap and get this... even the gas tank!

Thanks!

It's a PITA really. I should take a pic of my wiring adapter . . .

Rewired the *entire* car OBD2. Trust me once you've done it, you'll want to brag a lot too. Took ~60 hours of work (I was only second person to do it. B18CXr was first).

So Once I did that it was easy to pass, since the car is/was 100% CA legal.

I added:

Second o2
Evap purge control cannister
Evap purge control solenoid
Fuel tank pressure guage
and all the OBD2 stuff that was already on the motor had to be wired up.

The easier way is to convert the motor to OBD1, but there were no B18C5's in CA in 1995, so that wouldn't work for me . . .

Many people have put OBD1 intake manifoleds on B18C1 motors and reffed them as 1995 motors, even when they are 1996-2001 motors . . .

If it's a C1, I'd reccomend that route . . .

jeff562,

More questions:
1. Did you use an aftermarket Fuel tank pressure gauge?
2. Do I have to change my Fuel tank with the equivalent Fuel pump?
3. Are the refs gonna look at my ECU? Mine is P72 OBD1?

Thanks

I pulled the fuel tank pressure guage assembly off a 98 LS Integra. If you get the whole assembly, It'll mount right up to the EG fuel tank . . . (I have pics of it, but not online). The vacum lines will match prefectly as well to the existing EG fuel tank.

I did not replace the fuel tank or fuel pump in order to pass smog. However this is only gonna work up to 1998 (Hence my 2000 motor is reffed as a 1998). 1999 and up there is a "fuel recovery system" that would necessitate replaceing the tank and adding several hard lines. I decided not to mess with this, as finding a tank that would match perfectly is highly unlikely.

They never looked at my ECU or any underdash/in car wiring. They are only interested in the engine bay (and making sure the CEL still works).

HTH
Jeff

Thanks jeff652...

I do have one more question though, did you change your under dash wiring harness to a Type R or your existing Civic one?

One thing I noticed here in Cali, a lot of guys doing swaps, end up selling their cars and/or engine because they can't pass smog and due to their lack of knowledge about B.A.R/Smog issues. These are some of the issues hybrid owners or shops won't tell you.

Appreciate all the info you've provided. Hopefully this will help others.

Ahhh here's the pics of the fuel tank pressure assembly . . .

I did not replace any wires under the dash (i.e. the harness, just added a bunch of loose wires~)

I'll try to get a pic of the adapter harness tomorrow . . .

Jeff

Why would you need a jumper harness? And OBD1 P72 ECU will plug right into an EG chassis . . .

No they won't check the ECU, you can 'fake them out' by having all the sensors in the right places - even if the ECU isn't looking for them . . .

Jeff,

1. Did the refs look at your fuel pressure gauge assembly?
2. What ECU are you using?

no they didn't look under the gas tank area at all. They looked for EVAP stuff and the second 02 sensor . . .

I'm running a 98 P73 (Type R) ECU.

They didn't check the distributor or anything like that either, their diagrams cover vacume lines and sensors only, not harness plug types, etc . . .

Jeff,

I am going to be putting a 96 LS block + 98 LS head in my CRX. I am going to be using a 95 intake manifold and all 95 smog equipment. I will be using a non-OBD distributor and ECU.

You see any trouble with me reffing it as a '95 if I have all 95 smog controls?

Dustin

No, there should be no problems as long as you have ALL smog equipment. Oh, and keep the engine bay neat!
