Default California Law and a B16b in my 2000 Civic Si

I am about to swap in a b16b into my 2000 civic si, i know i know, everyone is gunna tell me to get a b18c BUT listen to my question, and then I might be persueded to get one. First off, if I swap the b16b into my 2000 si, I would THINK it would be legal since on the CARB website it says japanese replacement motors are OK as long as there are functionally indentical to the original motor. Now I have a b16a2 in there, so I would think the b16b would be considered a "replacement". However, is the ITR b18c a "replacement" too or an "engine change". An "engine change" is hard to get smogged on a JDM motor. I would think it would be a change because the original was a b16, not a b18. Let me know your thoughts about this, or share experiences. I know that I have to have all the original smog crap hooked up, and possibly use the US spec ECU. Let me know.

must be stock ecu when you smog...but keep in mind that the b16b has higher compression than your stock b16a so it may be a problem regradless.

just got off the phone with CARB, they claim the JDM motor needs to have a "US certified stamp " on it in order to be legit. Anyone ever heard of this

dont believe those bureaucrats. many people here on h-t have purchased jdm swaps along with alot of hard work and have had them passed under california air resources board aka swap *****.

just do a search and youll find all the answers you need.

I thought this was how it went:

Your "replacement" engine must be a replacement for an engine that came in a US-spec car. For example, a B18C engine can be passed because it basically the same thing as a B18C1 USDM Engine, JDM B16A is equivalent to a USDM b16a2, etc.

The B16B never came in any car in the US, so as I've understood it, you can't legally swap that engine in, because its not a "replacement" for any US-Spec engine.

You need an engine that is the same as one that came in the US, and the US ECU and smog equipment. i.e. US B18c1 and US p72 ecu.

It must also be from the same year as your car or newer. So, no 1999 or earlier engines in your 2000.

this is true, I've gone round and round getting answers on swaps as I am in processing of completing my B18C1 swap. Motor to be swapped in must be same year or newer of your car and has to have an equivalent sold here in the US

ya its true , you cant smog a b16b at the bar to get a cert. it doesnt have a usdm counterpart.

and why would you put a b16b when you have a b16a? you can also get the bar for your current motor then put the b16b in but why in gods name waste all that money when you can have so much more for less money.

alright, well the reason i wanna swap the b16b in is for a few reasons becuaes the motor i have right now is dying, so I want to do that. but anyways, do u really think that at a smog shop, they will be able to tell its a b16b, i mean theres the engine stamp, but i dont think they look at that. hell, I could prolly take my engine code number off of my b16a2 right now and stick in on there. do you really think they will question it if it has all the smog equipement hooked up?

My question is

if you have a 1990 CRX can you take a 1992 b16 motor and get all the 94 Del Sol DOHC VTEC smog equipment and will the smog ref allow it because its a newer motor then your 1990... even though there was no 92 Del Sol VTEC

yes...you would have to convert your car to obd1 though...and this is the only way a b16a(jdm) will ever be legal in a usdm car...unless you are crazy enough to do an obd2 conversion...
