Default B18a block with a b16 head

I had a few questions for you guys. As you can see by the name i usually only deal with vw's and audi's only because its all ive ever owned. My girlfriend however has a 92 acura Integra GS and were looking at playing with it a little bit. I know a ton about european cars however japanese engines fluster me only because ive never looked any deeper past the vtec valve cover. She complains because its not as fast as some of the cars ive built which were pretty quick (rabbit with a 2.0 16v 14.7@99 mph,Golf with a 2.8 8v built etc). I think it was more the torque that threw her. Her car is pretty torquey for a honda, but i think she'd be very happy with a vtec setup, and i was looking into doing the head swap for her. I know its a head an oil line and an ECU but is there anything else i should watch out for, replace or change while ive got the head off anyways? any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Please understand any advice is welcome. I do prefer german cars, however it should be evident that i have a lot of respect for hondas done right. Thanks a lot guys.

There are probably lots of people on this board that will not give their advice because you like Audi's and VW's. I had a rabbit with a 2.0 8v and loved it. I dont know much about the LS/VTEC build up otherwise I would help you out. Good Luck.

i have lsvtec. second welcome to h-t. i could care less if you like vw or audi if i could afford it i would have one myself. anyway you need to change the pistons to civic type r or civic si pistons. you should use a block guard for reliablity or if you go all out sleeve it. you should change oil pump to a vtec one water pump to vtec one, change the timing belt to vtec one. run the oil line like you know and it is recomended that you use arp rod bolts and head bolts. she will be very very happy with this setup it is some real fun.

If her engine is in decent shape with a moderate amount of miles you could just run a LSVTEC setup without rebuilding it. Your best bet would be to get the complete VTEC head, and get a VTEC oil pump. A good bet would be to change the water pump too since youll be changing the timing belt anyway.

A setup i was considering building was a B18a block(usually cheaper than B18b due to age and miles) with GSR pistons and shot peening the stock LS rods w/ ARP rod bolts. Then using any VTEC water pump, oil pump and timing belt. The reason i wanted to run this setup was because its a fairly cheap build. I didnt want to pay the price for aftermarket pistons/ rods. You can get GSR pistons for a lot less than aftermarket and the prementioned setup would still produce a good amount of power and be very reliable.

You will need to get a b16 intake manifold, a vtec distributor, new ecu, and differently get arp rod bolts. I didnt switch to a vtec oil pump but I have an itr oil pump waiting to be put on my new block. Depending on how you want to go about it I would rebuild the whole engine and put in some different pistons but if the block is in good shape then go for just the head.

I have a B18A in my DX now and would like to go LS/VTEC. The motor only has 53k miles so I would like to use the bottom end for a while. If I use a B16A1 head, what would my compression be? I have a set of B16A1 pisons, could I use these? If so what would the compression be? Thanks

Yep you could use those b16 pistons and it would actually it a lot better than using the stock ls slugs. Only use the b16 pistons if you going all motor though... You'll have to take them to a machine shop and have them fit on. According to the c-speedracing.com compression thing youll be running around 11.6
