b16a2 vs b18c....$1000+ for GS-R worth it over the Si engine?
is it worth it to spend 1000 or more xtra for a GSR motor than a Si motor b16a2?.....only diff would be a lil more hp (10) and torque right?.......how much would both run about with install? this is going to be in a civic 98 ex coupe. i heard the b16a2 is easier and bolts on directly while the gsr needs a mount kit, etc.

b18c install is the exact same. No special mounting kit necessary.
Get the b18c, I wish I did. No torque sucks.

Yeah, gsr over b16 anyday, never compared dynos but I would guess that it makes more power through out the entire rpm band, and probably goes higher than 10 hp and 10 ibs of torque somewhere in there.

*anything with mods will be better than another engine stock*
B18C1 is just a better engine hands down
drive an SI, then drive a GSR
then drive a GSR with 200 lbs off the car
"1.8 makes life great"

10 hp and 10 ft-lbs of torque more...MAX. i dont have any dyno charts to prove it, but i do believe that the torque is ALOT more in the gsr than the b16 in the low and midrange....my friend's have 2 98 civic cx's. one has a b16a2 and the other has a gsr...the gsr does mid 14's on street tires and the b16 does low 15's on street tires...stock for stock (other than header/intake/exhaust--which both of them have)...its up to you to decide what you want to do with your car...

Or buy the B16, then do a B20 vtec conversion on it. It will only cost a little more than the GSR motor.
But B16 vs B18C1, GSR all the way. Spend the extra money.

really depends how you'll be driving it and what you have planned for it.. but for na street driving the torque of a 1.8l is a night and day difference from the putt putt low-end of a b16.. if i could do it all over again i'd go 1.8 from the start.. ah well.. live n' learn..

My fiancee' and I both own 1992 Civic Si hatches and beteween the two of us we've got the b-series VTEC thing covered.
I have had a 1995 B18C1 in my car, and now have a 1998 B18C5 in it.
She has a 1999 B16A2 in her car.
When I had the GS-R swap, we both had IDENTICAL mods - I/H/E, clutch, EVERYTHING.
Which one do I prefer? The B18C1 over the B16A2. Why? More low-end grunt to get you going was the main reason, and once in VTEC the GS-R motor still felt stronger. Don't get me wrong - the B16A2 is bad-*** - dynoed BASE of 143whp with bolt-ons. 100lb/ft torque too. My GS-R dynoed 150whp after tuning (sorry, I know) and 123lb/ft of torque (good). Where are you getting low mileage B16A2 for $1000.00 cheaper than B18C1s?
As far as trannies go...how could anyone say that the B16A2 trannies are crap? SAME gearing as my TypeR tranny, just no LSD. If anything, the GS-R tranny is less desirable due to slightly longer gearing - at least for all-motor or stock motor configurations.
And the ITR swap? At first I was dissappointed in it, but since I only paid $4000.00 for the WHOLE wrecked ITR, I wasn't complaining. I ran a 14.6 in my GS-R swap.
I ran a 13.9 @ 100.97mph in the ITR swap with less mods.
For the money you CANNOT go wrong with the GS-R/B18C1 swap. Plus the GS-R is better for NOS or turbo to begin with vs. the B16A2. True the rod ratio on the B16A is awesome, but who goes that far when they build up a turbo, right?
My 2 cents - from experience.
