I'm going to start autocrossing my s2k this spring. What kind of setups are you guys running? Wheels, tires, suspension, etc. What classes are you racing?

 

I've been autocrossing for 10yrs now, but only a year with my S2000. Is this your first time autocrossing? Anyway, i'm currently running stock, except for tires and brakes. US spec alignment (going to switch to UK soon), Hawk pads, two set of tires; Azenis and RS-3. I usually do HPDEs since autox prices have gotten too expensive, 55 bucks for 2 heats (1-2min)5-6 runs = not worth it

 

Usually people invest in pads and tires first, then go from there.

 

order of importance imo....brakes, tires, suspension, and if you want to be competitive, power adders, but thats completly up to you...i think the stock power is fine honestly

Don't even do a thing to it, just make sure the car is running good and have fun.

the worst thing you can do is all a bunch of sh-t to it and not knowning why you are getting sh-tty time due to modification. You can add a turbocharger and not get a 1/10 on a course if you don't know how to drive it right.

don't just add stuff just because there's modified car on the event, add stuff to your car once if you think it's going to make it faster. Start with a stock car and just try to learn and have fun, you'll know what to get once you can tell where's the problem, sometime it's the suspension, sometime it's not, it varies and there's no way to tell until you get some seat time.

careful with tire and pad selection, on a short autox course some tire might not even get to be in ideal operational temp if your area is cold, same with racing pad. Let's face it, you probably not going to get the fastest time that day so just have fun, meet new people and ask them what they use for brakes and tires.

conventional wisdom will tell you to get a set up performance pad all around, but if you talk to the guys on track with the NA miata, you'll know that chassis will stop shorter if you put a more aggressive pad in the rear.

have fun and be safe, oh, make sure you have a proper fitting lid with the right cerfication

 

I've autocrossed a few times in different cars. I've never taken it too seriously and actually thought about it.

eh, I disagree. Tires are definitely the first order of business. Followed by suspension second. Nobody needs brakes at blistering 35mph speeds. I use my stock pads for autocross.

You have to mod smart in autocross. A test pipe alone, for example, puts you into some insane race class that you'd have no chance in hell of even being significant in.

I have KWV3s, 225/45/17 and 265/40/17 starspecs, wheels, recaros, ane exhaust, TP and clutch. Sounds like...5 more HP than stock. I got put into the same class as a Slicked out STi making ridiculous power, and a Supercharged E46 and other crazy *** cars. I podium'd (3rd, cuz I'm a busta). But...I would have dominated in a more stock class.

Try to be a big fish ...try to make the pond small. Opposite of my situation.

Go bone stock first. You should be like...A stock or B stock or something. Get tires as the only mod. Learn the car, see what you like or dislike once you get good enough at driving and decide on mods from there. No point in modding a car without knowing where it needs improvement.

Plus...even if you got to 60 once or twice, I would hope any car's brakes were good enough to slow down from a speed that's under the legal limit of most highways.

 

i enjoy going back and forth with you B, so with that said i mean no disrespect with any arguements....but the speed limit on the highway here is 55

tires first u wana get something that heats up fast cause u dont wana spend ur first three runs heating up the tires and then finaly having good grip on ur last run.

last auto x event i did was was on kuhmo r comps on stock ap1's 225 front 245 rear had tein flex coilovers. power wise i was runin a gutted box+ snorkel buddyclub header with the specIII single. i was in the ssm2

 

What other tires you guys running? I've got a set of dunlop direzza sport z1 star spec's on all four corners now. So far they seen like a decent tire. I don't know how much abuse they can take though

 

Those are some of the best tires out there. They can take what you dish out. I bought those tires a week after their u.s. debut and nobody had them or had heard of them. Suckers were all still on KDWs or RE01Rs.
Now like 90% of cars at the track/autocross have them. I'm on my 2nd set.

 

Yea, so far I like them. How long did the first set last for you?

 

~5000 street miles, 5-6 HPDE days, 1 autocross, and 1 track crash. So...a while.

 

I could not disagree more with this list for autocross.
Brakes are way, way down on the list. The stock brakes are complete overkill for autocross.

Get seat time, take a school, but I wouldn't touch the car for at least 6 Solo events. Get some experience, learn how to drive what you have, and if possible, get a veteran codriver. This is 2X more important if you have an AP1.

Mod the driver.

If you really want to mod your car, you'd have to decide on a class before anyone could give you an intelligent answer. I'd recommend the STR class after spending some quality time in B-Stock.
