Default What is the difference between dyno types?

Vapor - in a different thread you said there are different types of dynos?

Please explain, I thought they were all the same, after all isn't HP - HP? and Torque -Torque??

Enlighten me at least please!

It was explained to me in very simple terms but here are the differences. There are roller type dynos like a dynojet (mustang etc etc etc) where the car is strapped down to very large rollers and the time at which it takes the car to accelerate those massive huge rollers will equate to the torque the car produces where hp can then be calculated from. One of many flaws that can be encountered when using these roller type dyno's is drag induced from the tire/wheel combo, the way the car is strapped down to the dyno, and many other variables that fall into play.

The second type of dyno is a dynapack. The car is not strapped down to any huge rollers. Instead, the wheels are removed and it's connected to the hubs of the car. This limits variables that may introduce error and will bring about truer results. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying dynojets are junk. They are like comparing apples to oranges.

So...why is there a difference b/w the '04 outputs on the dynojet and the dynapack? Technically, there shouldn't be. But one very important variable is the rate of acceleration in terms of rpms. It's suspect that has been ignored or forgotten when dyno'ing the different model year s2000s which of course would show a different result. So who's right? I have more faith that the author at temple of vtec knows what he's doing than other dyno operators out there and don't think that article is a crock. There are many people that just don't want to accept the truth or are looking for another truth to give them more security that their previous models are superior. Those are just assumptions as to why some have taken the issue so passionately that temple of vtec is wrong and the '04s make the same hp but more torque.
