VTEC setting question
For people who have changed their VTEC engagement point. I hear around 4k is optimum for my FI application, but Ill find out after I tune it. Anyhow if it is around that rpms range, when cruising at 60+ Ill be in VTEC. Will I burn out my solinoid? Has anyone had a problem with this yet?
The short answer: no.
The long answer: dropping a 100 to 150rpms would be fine, but anything more and you will actually lose power, not to mention, lose the actual purpose of vtec and why it was develoepd the way it is. Hint: it was originally developed on moto GP bikes, not F1.

i dropped mine to 5500... and yes it's dynoed and tuned at 5500... and it pulls really hard once it hits that area.... and no i didn't lose power i gained power all the way though though the power band.....

There should be a certain throttle percentage you have to be at for it to engage.

Where the heck do you "cruise" at 100mph?

Yeah I know captain obvious.
After the tune, the VTEC point will be lowered enough that I will be in VTEC during highway cruising in 6th gear, also in part because of the gears.
I was wondering if it is alright to be in VTEC while cruising for a long distance or extended amount of time.

it'll be fine .. if you have a plan on going for a long drive, you might wanna bring extra quarts of oil
...
my cousin and i went for 2 & half hours of trip and he was in Vtec the whole way ... he burnt about a quart of oil ... as for my kaa , it was good

I was worried on my trip that the high piston speeds for extended periods of time would put a lot of wear on the motor. I also figured that partial throttle in Vtec would starve the motor of air. But I guess I'm just paranoid because I don't wanna have to replace a motor that pricey.
A friend and I took his JDM B16 hatch on a 10 hr round trip in Vtec most of the time and not even a week after we got back his motor was smoking like an old lady. He had a Honda techn. tear it down and he decided it was our road trip that burnt up his rings and other crap. He said it may have been a lack of oil pressure at high rpms that contributed to the failure.

Nah your VTEC point won't end up that low. You're not looking for the most power but for the smoothest power curve. You will see exactly what I'm talking about on the dyno. If you get it just right, it will likely yield the most power and you won't be able to tell where it kicks in on the chart. 5500 sounds correct but each FI setup has different boost profiles so it may be a bit +-.
