Tuning options for a comptech s/c S2000
a friend just bought a s/c'ed S2000....comptech kit (also came with ce28n's on it) and it's lean popping under boost around 6k. I've advised him to not drive it until a viable solution can be found as to tuning. We're in NC..so we're limited to 2 ppl for tuning, Jdogg (real good friend of mine..but possibly out of my friends price range) and Jack at P1. There's no way in HELL i'd ever let him go to RLZ...just so they can blow his car up too, and i'm NOT going back to Mark at turbo tune....
but the question is not so much WHO can tune it, that's established, but....in what way can it be tuned?
what engine managments are around for the s2k? He's not really wanting to go to an EMS...and would prefer to keep the stock ecu in there for $$ reasons. Are there any good piggy backs or "obd1" type options like neptune, crome, hondata? Last s/c s2000 i was around with that got tuned (this was back in like...02 maybe..maybe 01?) used and e-manage...and it just sucked. But, has emanage evolved into being a good option...or is it still junk?
Basically...i just want him to have a tune he can drive with and have fun on...that won't break the bank, seeing as he just bought the car and doesn't have much disposable income at the moment to dick away. All he has for the tune now is the stock ecu and supplied FMU.
thanks for any help

Pretty much you can get a deasent tune with the supplied FMU as long as you are using the stock boost pulley.
E-Manage and AEM ems are the two major tuning options, but you need a tuner and you said that your friend wants the OEM ECU.
Im not sure what kind of tune you could get with a piggy back system such as Apexi, but I know some people use that option.

the apexi tricks the ecu into adding more fuel by adjusting the map voltage.. problem is, the comptech ESM clamps the map voltage to prevent the ecu from seeing boost. adding fuel with the VAFC would make the CEL go off because the voltage would exceed what comptech clamps it at (2.9v i believe). the only way to tune with the apexi is to turn up the fuel pressure, and then subtract fuel.

when i said piggy back, i was refering to the e-manage
a vafc isn't even good enough for a stock civic, let alone a s/c s2k, haha
and the car is registering 5.5psi on an autometer gauge...

if you cant afford proper tuning and proper engine management, dont even bother boosting the car.

I agree.... leave it the way it is, at the current boost level and management...

You have one option for tunning, no one has offered. The CT kit has a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. By adjusting the FPR you can richen up the mix to smooth out your lean issue.
Many S2000 CT S/C owners run the kit as is. Once you start messing with the kit, your wallet will take a major hit. most follow this path once the boost bug hits them. First a VAFC and FPR tuning. Next e-Manage and finally AEM EMS. As you can see the $$ can go quickly.
Good luck
