Default tranny problems

I'm looking into buying an s2k. i know that the 04 tranny is different in that the gears are carbon coated, just wondering if there is a difference in tranny's between the '01 and '02 models, are there any other performance related differences between '01 and '02 that would raise concern. i'm planning to put a turbo kit on as soon as i get it so don't want any unexpected problems. any help would be appreciated
also if anyone has had any drivetrain problems with high hp s2k please post

if you turbo charge it you're going to want to replace the clutch and rear diff among a couple other things here and there..

I'm curious as well. As far I know, 00,01,02,03 trannys are all identical.

Joining an 04 tranny with the 9K rev limit seems like a win win situation. 1st through 4th is geared higher, 5th is untouched and 6th lower for better mileage. Not to mention the carbon syncros

yes.. 00,01,02, and 03 have the same trannys... but the 00,01,02 had a problem with 1st and 2nd gear i believe... something about it clicking which isn't really a big deal... in 03 they corrected it... as for the 04, 05 it's geared differently then then previous and also has the carbon syncros..

I have an 01. problem with mine is a crunchy 3-4 upshift at rev limit only. I'm sure its an isolated case.

at what power level should you be needing to replace the diff. i know it would need a clutch, but for starters on the turbo it should hopefully being putting down close to 300 whp daily and alittle more on c112, just wondering what experiences people have had with it. also wasn't there a technical service bulletin of some sort on the 00-02 tranny's regarding the grinding

the dealer will usually take care of the 00-02 tranny grinding thing if it's still under warranty..... as for the diff... the diff is really week, people have blown them while their car was stock with very agressive driving, while others have taken their cars to track days and auto-x and had no problems.... if you're going to drive very agressively and do clutch drops and yada yada, i highly suggest you swap your diff out if you get a turbo...

does anyone know if there is anything else I should consider performance wise between the 01 and 02 models, i heard that the 02 has a better ecu, i don't know, i'm just trying to get a feel if i should save some money and go with an 01

yes they did modify the ecu a little, but not much... i think the 00, and 01 get around 185 to 195rwhp stock while the 02 and 03 get around 190 to 200rwhp stock. but it's an average and almost everyone that gets a baseline dyno gets around 190 to 195rwhp... so the difference isn't much...

also remember the 02+ has the glass rear window while the older ones have the plastic rear window....

technically, the problem was only with the '00 transmissions. Most of the tranny issues with this car is due to driver error. After 35k miles of street and track, my '01 transmission has zero problems.

marques4130: there's plenty of threads on the differences b/w the years. Search, you will find it. If you're worried about gearbox failures, that's dependent on how much torque you're going to make, not hp.

thanks vapor for the info, yeah I know that the torque is the measurement of what the tranny can handle, i was just seeing if there would be any benefit to paying the extra cash to get an 02 model instead of an 01, I already searched quite a bit and all i got was alot of aesthetic defferences between the years. I had talked to geoff (full-race) at sema and he said there s2000 had blown a tranny( but it was also 500+ hp) on the dyno and was seeing if anyone else had had any probs, but it seems like most if it involves not driving like a jerkass, thanks for everyone's help
