Default Steering

Im hoping someone will be able to get me going the right direction..
I have a 2002 s2000. About 7 or 8 months ago, I noticed that when I would back out of the driveway, put the car in 1st turning the wheel right (clockwise) it seemed harder than normal. I figured, well its cold out. Now everytime he sits for a long period of time the wheel seems hard to turm when turning to the right. Whats going on?

Just a girl...

S2000s have eps(electronic power steering) so there is no fluid. Yes it was rude of him, but if you don't know about the car you're providing input on...

advice that doesn't help is worse then no advice. One thing I've learned from posting on here is if you don't know what you are talking about just sit back and learn.

You said as you were backing out of the driveway, were you turning the wheel while moving or in place? And did it continue during driving?

Yes I know its electric, wow thought I might actually get helpful advice. It seems to continue until the car is warmed up. Someone told me that the electrical system that controls the power sterring may be going out.

well in doing so you made yourself look like, guess what? an idiot...the steering system is not a hydraulic pump system..if you dont know anything about the kind of car someone is asking advice for, in this case, an s2k, why would you try giving advice?

OP, try looking at the connections to the steering rack...i have seen those corrode and the connections become messed up...i find it odd, however, that its just when you turn to one side

From the Helms manual page 17-19 - is the EPS light illuminating when you start the car? Does it stay lit? You can get the DTC for the EPS if there is a stored code but it sounds like you aren't seeing enough of an issue to trigger a DTC.

You say the problem is when you turn to the right, but do you ever turn to the left under the same conditions?

Wait.. what's an S2000 doing in the kitchen?

but really, if the problem is intermittent and only to a particular side, it doesn't sound like the EPS is the only issue. Are the tires inflated evenly (too much drag will definitely overpower the EPS, and will be exacerbated by the hill of a typical driveway shifting weight onto one side). If it is the EPS, there's probably a break in the electrical circuit, so best to inspect all the leads from EPS fusebox to the EPS control unit next to the battery.

If that's what you need then here's one for $125. I can vouch for the seller too.

F/S EPS UNIT

LOLZ.

Well, simple things first. How is the air pressure in the front tires? Low air pressure can cause harder steering.

I *might* suspect maybe a bad alignment setting, but you said it happens even at a stand still and when the car warms up, it goes away. So the alignment issue is unlikely. But just for the sake of axing, did you hit any curbs/potholes/human beings lately?

If the tire pressure is not low, you can try the torque sensor reset before you spend money on an EPS unit. http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/8602...da-pgm-tester/

Scroll down a bit. There's a procedure and a diagram. You'll need a paperclip. I've done this procedure and it's somewhat tricky. The wheel needs to be turned JUST right for the EPS to recognize you're administering a test.

Once all that free stuff fails, try spending $ on the EPS unit.

There is one other variable that hasn't been mentioned. The steering shaft has a U-joint protected by a rubber boot which runs next to the A/C unit. Its possible that this joint is hanging up a bit or that the rubber boot is deteriorating a bit (its 9 years old now).

I wouldn't place my money on this being the case, but it would affect very low speed steering response. Just spray the U-joint down to with WD40 to eliminate it as a variable. Also, inspect the rubber boot. The shaft is very easy to access from under the car on the driver's side.
