Default coolant not circulating????

ok, so my s2k had no heat until the engine was running for a lot longer than usual. so, we started with the thermostat. that was stuck shut, so it was a good thing we changed it. the upper hose would get really really hard, like it was under a lot of pressure. even with the new thermostat, we get the same thing. it is certainly possible that the new thermostat is defective, but i was looking to see if there were any other possibilities that might be worth looking into here. anyone know what any of the symptoms are for the water pump going in these cars? i drove the car for almost 2 hours earlier today, and after about 1 1/2 hours, it started acting like it was going to overheat. every time i moved the temp would go back down. that kinda tells me thermostat again. i will check the thermo again and see if it is no good, but wanted to know any other symptoms that this might relate too. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Sounds like a combo of things.
Check your fans.
Pressure test the cooling system (very easy to do if you buy the pump that attaches in place of you rad cap)
Check the thermostat to make sure it is working by boiling a pot of water and dropping it in. You should see it open.
After that I would check the water pump just because everything else is much easier to do.

Did you bleed the system after fitting the thermostat? I changed my stat the other day and it took a bit of time to bleed fully.

You did fit the stat with the little dangly bit of metal at the top?

ok, so still seem to have a pretty serious problem with my s. had the motor pressure tested today, help the psi, no leaks. it passed the pressure test. ok, so i replaced the thermostat, and water pump at the same time, since it was easy enough and i wanted to just make sure it wasn't either of those. started the car, ran it for 20 min or so, everything works, both upper and lower hose were getting warm (unlike before, bottom hose never heated up), the temp gauge stayed at 3 bars, plenty of heat, let the heat run for about 10 min, stayed nice and warm. i figured it was all set, so i took it for a little drive to test it out. i drove about a mile, no problems. i got to the highway, figured i would shoot up the highway one exit and see. sure enough, all i had to do was hit the highway, i hit vtec in a couple gears to get the engine revving and warm, and bam, overheated almost instantly. i drove the short distance home, the overflow is overflowing, the upper hose is very hot, the lower hose is cool to the touch again. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???? the coolant was circulating just fine while it was running before i took it onto the highway and opened it up. the oil is fresh, no foam or contamination in it, no coolant coming out of the exhaust, nothing seems to be leaking. what the heck is going on with this motor?

I experienced a similar problem recently. I replaced my radiator and didn't bleed the cooling system completly. It ran perfect untill I was about 15 minutes into my freeway journey. The gauge shot up to full bars. I pulled over to find the system boiling over just as yours did. I let it cool down for about 40 minutes and then I turned the car back on and turned the A/C on,(this was to force the high speed cooling fan on), then I slowly added cool water while the engine was running. After that, I never had another problem.

P.S. LAS2K. Keep your rude comments that are completly unnecessary to your self. If your not going to be helpful go talk S&*t to people somewhere else.

las2k: what the . . . ? not even worth a comment about the grill thing, but no, actually, i do not have a ricey grill insert or anything like that. don't comment on my posts any more please. you are wasting space.

i actually did some research elsewhere on this and it's possible the shop that did the service to the car last might have put in the wrong coolant. i will be having it flushed and replaced with the honda stuff specific for this car tomorrow, just to be sure it's the right stuff, and i will make sure that all the air is out of the system. i will use your suggestion, spunkysandoval, about the a/c and cool water to get the air out after we get the new coolant in and warm up the engine a little. thanks for the tip.

it was a guess because on many occasions i have seen this happen because the mesh crap people put on their bumper blocks the air flow to the radiator. and suck my fatty if you don't like what i say i was trying to help.

please explain how i talked ****? rofl. i asked a question

There's a loss of pressure somewhere. Check the bleeder valves and firewall mounted hard heater hoses too. Bypass the TB and manifold coolant hoses and see if that changes anything.
