Default Why is my MAP sensor throwing a code? (and what exactly does a MAP sensor do?)

I have had some problems w/ my fuel setup lately and it has been driving me nuts. The other day I turned my fuel pressure real high and was messing with my V-AFC and drove my car around a bit. It didn't take long for my CEL to come up showing code 3 (MAP). When this happened the car instantly ran like ***. The idle went down to 500rpm(ish) and felt like it was running on 3 cylinders(slow to react, very hesitant, and felt like it was going to stall, and even did once). I think I might have the wrong injectors in as well, which is why I was messing around with my fuel.
So could me messing around with my fuel setup cause me to throw a CEL?

Oh, and what exactly does the Map sensor do? Thanks for all the help.
