VTEC wont switch on (sometimes?)
My VTEC has been acting up lately. The first 15-25 min of driving are fine with normal VTEC function. driving for long periods i notice that i get a muffled thumping sound coming from the engine and NO vtec, (it seems like its trying, but cant engage...) After a few times it just revs like an H22A with no VTEC. Could it be the vtec solenoid?

Ok...
1) Did you check you oil pressure in the head?
2) How often do you change your oil???....The journals(spell) on you second set of cams(vtec) could be sticking, getting clogged? Have had it happen to a friend b4.
3) Could be the solenoid. I would take it apart, check to make sure the Piston is not getting jammed/stuck in the cylinder. Clean it all out. (3) bolts hold the solenoid on to the assb. Then another (3) unbolts the assembly from the head.
Just check everything over.

Re: VTEC wont switch on (caliriptide)
Very good advice...I will check all these items and get back to you.
For the record...
1. vtec DOES work, just not all the time. When the engine is operating for more than 45 min to an hour, vtec tries to come on, but cannot, making a really wierd sound thumping sound. Is heat an issue?
2. funny you talk about the second cam not hitting vtec. I notice that when vtec was working properly, it (vtec) wouldnt hit as hard as some of my buddys ludes...and i have more mods!! then when the car was good and warm...vtec would SLAM very hard...
3. I'm wondering if the second cam is sticking...it seems this is ALSO whats goin on on top of vtec not working.
I will check the whole system an let you guys know...THANKS

OIL OIL OIL...
if cam can't "STICK"... and their more than enough oilpressure to blow any chunk of **** in the way to your assemblies...
check your oilpressure and oil if the selenoid was bad it would throw a light, because the ecu constantly looks for it...
A cam can't stick, if so it would strip the teeth of your timing belt and possibly destroy the motor by collision with valves... something else is the problem but check the top ones.
