Default VTEC failure????

I bought my 2000 Honda Prelude in June. After a week it had to go back for a new motor (thank god it was certified and they paid for it all.) Ever since I got it back it doesn't seem right. It has been back three times because of the check engine light coming on due to VTEC failure. All of the failures have come at speeds close to 100 and over. I don't understand this. The dealership isn't doing anything about it except resetting the ECU and giving it back to me. Why is it only happening at high speeds? I can redline every gear and get higher RPMs then when it goes off. Another problem....the redline is 7500 RPMs on the stock guage, but the fuel cuts out at 7000 RPMs. That doesn't seem right does it? Any help would greatly be appreciated....Thanks

the cut out for fuel on the prelude is 7600 which is correct, i think there is a sensor on the vtec solenoid which could be giving false read outs at high speeds. Check into that..

the tach says redline is at 7400

the computer is supposed to cut the fuel at 7600

as for your vtec problem, i can only assume you have a small oil leak somewhere in the vtec system......

im thinking this because when your going 100 or close to it, you are in vtec for a very long time, and so you are applying the oil pressure to all the vtec equipment for a long time, maybe this leak is letting too much pressure out and then the switch triggers the check engine light for low oil pressure....

Thanks for the help. How would I detect the oil leak and what would need to be replaced? There is nothing leaking from under the car. Will this effect overall vtec performance or just at high speeds? I have a vtec l.e.d. hooked up and the dealership is trying to tell me that its drawing amps away from the vtec and causing the failure.

Also is there any way to over-ride the factory fuel cut?

Always control the oil and check your VTEC solenoid...

o man bro..im having a similar problem like u...except i dun get a check engine light...i took my 98 prelude in for a tranny rebuild...and wen i got it back...my fuel would cut off at 6800rpm and i dun feel ctec as hard...so i brought it to honda since the tranny place couldnt find the problem and honda said my ecu is basically friend...so im still in the process wit honda right now figuring out if the ecu is my only problem .

The vtec solenoid failed before and thats why they said i needed the new motor. How can I check the solenoid myself? About the ECU....is there anyway to reprogram it or whatever....or atleast raise the fuel cut? What is Honda doing about your ECU man? I think thats my problem for sure.

search under hondata for editing ecu settings......but you wont need it unless you have some serious mods, 7600 is plenty for you....

your ecu is not fried if it works in every other gear......

try this, go into vtec in say 3rd gear and hold it at about 6k for a while, stay in vtec and see if the light comes on, if it does than you have a leak like i said......

and take away your vtec led.....wtf??? i think the sound/feel is enough to let you know, you dont need an led.....

eliminate the easy problems first, this is like something assuiing you have a blown motor when your spark plug wire is off the plug or something......
