Default timing question

If your ignition timing is off will the car make any strange sounds? Basically if I just tap the gas while idleing the car makes like a mettalic sound, not sure where the sound is coming from.

I bought a timing light at Sears last night so today I will check it. Hopefully that is my problem.

if you are referring to detonation, then yes, that can be caused by timing.

the best way I can describe it would be like shaking a tin can full of little rocks. It's caused by the cylinder firing while the piston is still on the way up. If that's the case, your timing is too advanced, and you need to retard it a little, but your timing light can tell you that.

No prob, but I would fix it asap. Detonation is hard on the motor and drastically increases wear on the internals.

put the timing light on it. If the cam timing is correct, then you can just adjust your dizzy to make up for the rest. Detonation can also be cause by running lean. If your timing is right, clean the injectors, change fuel filter, or it could potentailly be a failing fuel pump.
