Dilemma - Which Engine?

Default No Longer A Dilemma - New Project = 92 DX Hatch w/ B18B

Edit: Updated topic title, original title was asking which car you would choose. I chose the DX. ==


I posted on here about a week ago saying that I was looking at a 1992 Civic Si hatch, which would have the D16Z6 engine. I've been reading about this car and engine for a while now and have plans set for it (no swapping, just building/boosting). But here is the dilemma. I also have an opportunity to buy a 1992 DX that has a 1999 Integra motor in it (which should be the B18B1, I'm waiting for an email back from him to confirm).

I can get both cars for the same price. The Si needs a windshield, brakes, cat converter, and battery. The DX needs a windshield and hood.

Which car would you get? As far as tuning goes I heard the ODBII (integra motor) would be more difficult where the ODBI D16 would be great for tuning. I would be looking to go turbo with whichever one I get too.

Any insight/info you have is welcomed. Thanks!

I doubt they retained obdII with the 92 dx.

IMO, go for the b18b. You can make 100+ more horsepower with the same turbo setup on that engine.

B18b/b1 FTW!!!

Get the DX, better motor and most of the time you dont need that fancy schmancy **** like moonroof. Just one more thing to break and become a PITA to fix.

So you're saying that when they did the swap they could change it to operate on a different ECU?

I'm leaning towards the B18b but I'm a SOHC lover

Here is the thing though, the DX needs less work and has a newer B18b1 engine that should have less miles than the D16z6. I bet the price is cheaper on the DX also.

They probably used a obd2 to obd1 conversion harness and used the b18b ecu, whatever it is, along with a few other modifications to get it working good

Cool thanks guys. Hopefully I'll be able to talk to the guy today about the B18. I'm really hoping it's a hatchback :D

Can't go wrong with a B18 already swapped into a Civic for $500 though I guess

Jeez, I'd fly over there in like 5 minutes and pay with cold hard cash.. the motor costs more than $500 haha. u have a steal as long as it runs half way decent!

The 92 Si is $500 too. I wanted to make sure the swapped engine is worth it, as I said I'm new to the Honda thing and I'm not totally up to speed on all the engines yet. I'm at work today and I spent most of my morning reading about the B18b1 engine and I think that's the car I'm going to get

i love the d16z6 but if theyre the same car for the same price and your goin to turbo either, id go with the b18. its a way more powerful engine. not to mention its easier to find an lsd, if you want one.

I went and looked that the DX. It's a hatch
Lots of dents, especially in the roof, but I plan on getting the entire body done and painted so that's not a big deal. The only thing I REALLY didn't like, was that the previous owner took the tail lights off of the hatch part, so the only tails left are the small corners. I don't really like the look, but I guess I could swap hatches from a junkyard if I wanted.
Should be getting it deilvered on Friday :D

Yeah, even with the hatched being shaved in the middle you still cant go wrong for $500.

Yeah I think the hatch looks goofy like that. But for the price I can live with it for now. And since I plan on getting the entire body re-done, I think I'll go grab a hatch from the junkyard and toss it on there anyways. I'll post pics as soon as I get'em

i say go for the B18B and do Ls-turbo because you will have a nicer engine to begin with and you will make better times with the LS and have a more reliable motor. not saying the D16 isnt reliable but the Ls is a better motor

Plus the sleeper factor is much improved in the DX. A friend of mine has a 93 DX with a JDM B16, and he surprises the **** out of everybody.

It's going to be a big project. I basically have to gut the entire car. I need to replace the hood, fix the roof, replace passenger side fender most likely, and rip out the dash and all of the interior. The dash is a little hacked up, center console might need to be replaced, needs new carpet and headliner, and I'm going to replace the hatch. Once it's all gutted hopefully all the bodywork can be done and then paint the car Starlight Black Pearl instead of whatever green it is now. New headlights, taillights, suspension, wheels, replace window tint.

Phew.

Can't wait to get started. Just need to find a good place to work on it and store all the parts. lol.
