Default speed sensor problem.. help please

hey a while back my mph wherent reading nore my miles on the car nor my tripometer. from what i know its the speed sensor that was missed up. so i whent to the junk yard and changed it. and it didnt work nothing. nither of the 3 componets. so i said well maybe it was my bad luck. so i whent again exchanged it and still it doesnt work. what else can it be? and the item im talking about is the sensor with the little metal part along with the "key". hey by any chance will a speed sensor from a honda civic 4 door a 94 or something work on my car? to see if its just REALLY bad luck. please if you know anything on this post ASAP! thanks.

The VSS goes into the differential housing, which is more towards the firewall, on the transmission. It is almost directly underneath the throttle body.

It is long and slender, has a connector on top, two hose nipples sticking out about an inch, and a shaft with a gear on it at the bottom.

Are we talking about the same thing?

I'm not sure on the grounding issue, but it sounds, to me, like he has a strictly vss issue.

felix, don't disassemble the thing next time, just get the entire unit. You probably put it together wrong.

hey man i had that same propblem for about a year. i ended up solving it by taking the gear and its housing out of the top of the tranny and seeing that the arm that held it in place was actually broken. my speedo worked off and on and my cruise control as well as my odometer would only work when my speedo did. so i would pull it out and check to see if that arm is still in one piece. i was lucky and found a whole setup on ebay for 25 bucks. it was used but works perfectly.

so besides the sensor and the little peace with the key is not the only problem? there is that whole gear thing? how hard is it to remove that? the one with 2 nipples and what not.

Inspect the wiring connectors before you blame the sensors...the way that plug for the VSS sits it just retains water and it makes those pins corrode pretty easily.

zZzZzZz it was the key i was using for the damn things. the one i had (sensor) was missed up but when i got the sensor from the junkyard it came with its own key. and today i whent back for the 3rd one and saw that it didnt get fixed so i was like no freaking way... and i took a look at the key and saw that my old one had both lips big and the one they had gave me had a big and slightly smaller lip. so with that said i installed the old key with new sensor and my gauges now work again!!!

This is why I said to not disassemble them....it would have saved you a lot of hassle.
