Default serious help needed...

hey guys, on my way home a few minutes ago while crusing along at 60mph my car(95si) suddenly just lost all power, i mean the engine just STOPED then shut off, no response from the gas pedel.... the engine died... so i put it into neutral hoping i could coast long enough to pull into the local gas station... i examined under the hood, all hoses and fluids are normal, any idea's of what i might be dealing with before i take it to the mechanic and see how much money i'm going to be handing out.

Check your fuses. Did the dash lights and radio and everything go off? I bet you blew a fuse.

No, after futher inspection looks like the timing belt snaped, right before i got back home, that would explain most of the problems, still waiting for the mechaninc to call me back with the news. i know honda's have a rep for timing belts, the only thing i'm worried about are my valves, do you guys think after the belt snapped that i bent my valves? i hope to god not...

do a compression and leak down check, also, just listen to the engine, if it is ticking more than usual, maybe....

when it snapped, how were you driving? like were you pushing your engine pretty hard or what? that helps to hurt the engine...

did your car die, btw...because of power? or just engine shut off? If you didnt have power, check the alternator too, and probably you would need a new battery.

but if the timing belt is obviously snapped...that is going to be your problem

btw....figure out if your valves went bad before you get the timing belt fixed, might as well do it all at once....plus 1 big repair job is cheaper than 2 medium ones.

hondas dont have a rep for blowing timing belts, they have a rep for getting the head trashed from broken timing belts, because the owner didnt service it on time

at 60mph theres almost no doubt in my mind you probably got major valve damage, hondas engine design is whats known as an interference design when the belt breaks the pistons almost always hit the valves especially at high speeds

Thanks for the amazing insight douche, but at the last check up my mechanic said everything was looking fine, guess he's a cocknocker.

Did the compression and leakdown test, and cyln #3 is not showing anything, so that tells me i've probally bent those valves, and i have noticed a ticking in the engine so i guess thats proof, and hopefully my head isnt trashed.... not the best time of year to be dealing with 1K in auto repairs....

but thanks guys for all your help... now i just gotta suck it up and get to drive my 90hatchback around again for a while...

Is it an H23 or H22?

Typically these motors will eat valves when the timing belt goes.

If it's an H22, go ahead and get everything fixed, and throw in the manual tensioner and a PE Kevlar-backed timing belt for good measure.

its an H23a, yeah just talked to the mechanic, thankfully i'm not going to need a new head,
yeah those interference engines eat up valves when the belt goes... just wish i would have known it was coming... just had a "check-up" no less than a month ago and some idiot mechanic said everything was "fine"...

if you going to do something right guess you gotta do it yourself....
