Reverse does not have a synchro. There is an idler gear that sits between the mainshaft and countershaft. The reverse shift fork moves the idler gear up and down the reverse idler gear shaft which causes the idler to engage the counter and mainshafts when going into reverse. The reverse gear shift fork is engaged by a pin on the 5th gear shift fork.
So, your problem could come from any of those pieces. I'd guess the reverse shift fork or the 5th gear shift fork could be bent or out of spec.
Hopefully the idler gear is not damaged. If so, it might have damaged the reverse gears on the main or countershafts. The reverse gear on the countershaft is replaceable. On the mainshaft, however, the reverse gear is machined into the mainshaft, and the only way to replace it is to replace the entire mainshaft.
As for using parts from an H23 tranny, look up the part numbers and see if they're the same.
Too bad you're not in north Texas, I'd offer to do the work for a reasonable cost. I've done quite a bit of transmission work on Preludes.

my friend has the same problem in his teg.
no grind all of the sudden reverse is gone.
we teared apart the tranny and found out that its because the 5th gear/reverse syncro sleeve is damaged so that the selective gear cannot shift up/down freely that prevent from shifting into revese gear.
hope this would help.
