Possible problem. Please Help.
Alright, so I finally removed the broken crank bolt out of my 98 Prelude. I have noticed that when I rotate the crank, the cam gears do not move. So, if they don,t move, I am assuming that the shear pin that holds the crank pulley on, must also help with the cam pulley (I don't know if this is the case since I haven't looked in the book yet). So Please tell me that the H22A4 is a clearance motor and not an interfeance motor. The guy I bought the car from knew nothing about cars and I believe he might have cranked the engine after the crank bolt broke. Please Help.
Thanks
Thanks
Ok, so from what I can find on Google, it looks like the H22A4 is an interference motor. If this is correct, then it's possible that I would have engine damage. So, if the engine has only been cranked while the cams are stationary, then does anybody think that the valves may be ok?
depends what cycle the valves/cams were on, but my money is on valve and/or piston damage. you check your timing belt, by any chance?
Yeah, timing belt is in good condition. This is the first DOHC VTEC engine I have had so the setup is a little new. I can't tell for sure, but does anyone know if the shear pin slides all the way through the crankpulley and allows the timing gear to turn with the crankshaft? The engine is 100% stock also.
As long as all is the same as both of my H series motors, the key holds all the pulleys in place on the crankshaft, so if that key somehow came out, I guess in theory the crank would spin while the pulleys stay in place. And the engine is only supposed to be interfering in vtec, but as anyone who has broken a timing belt will tell you, they have bent or broken valves or other things, so you need to first get in the case and see how things are, if you can replace the key, puleys, and bolt, do it and realign the timing and tension the belt, then do a compression and leakdown test to see what shape everything is in.

That is my plan, I just wasn't sure if the key held it all in place. Damn, interference sucks. Well I'll cross my fingers and hope that nothing was damaged.
Thanks
