Default Please help.... overheating problem!

Hi All,

I've about had it with my 94 VTEC Prelude....

I am experiencing the following problems:

Car temperature increases over the half-way point up until redline once the car is either on idle or stuck in traffic.

Once I drive in freeway speeds (30 MPH +), temperature quickly decreases to half-way point again.

I've had the following parts replaced, and the I still have the same symptons:

Thermostat (factory part) $55.00
Fan Switch (factory part) $45.00
Fan Motor (factory part) $75.00
Radiator (aftermarket) $160.00

Coolant

Labor: $90.00

The fan comes on fine, coolant is full, and everything in the cooling system has been replaced... what else can it be?

I went as far as having the thermostat removed, and it would work fine as long as I'm on the freeway. But as soon as I'm on idle or stuck in traffic... it would overheat!!!

Can someone please help... I've spent almost $400.00 and still no resolution.

What else can it be.... my mechanic said that it could possibly be a crack head; but then shouldn't my temperature overheat constantly... instead of cooling down once I drive over 30 mph + ?

Please help,

Ken

I have the same problem with my 84 benz diesel. We replaced the thermostat and that helped a little, but it's still doing it. I'm now in the process of replacing the water pump, which should cure it. I doubt it's a cracked head. You might want to check your idle; a contributor to my problem was a throttle linkage that wouldn't totally close, causing it to idle high.

i had the EXACT same problems and went the same route you did. do you have any oil in your coolant by any chance? it honestly sounds like one of the following 3 things...

1) blown head gasket
2) warped head
3) warped deck on block

I have to agree with GUh22a...it is a head gasket or warped or cracked head....that is what it would do.....sorry for the bad news.

get my name right damnit!!! just kidding, when you take your head off, i advise having a machine shop check it out for you. it would be a good idea to check the deck of the block also...

I believe with a blown head gasket, you'd have some oil in the coolant. Check if your coolant is murky.
