Mechanic Advice: Overheating only during idle suggestions needed
Scenario: D16y7 engine.
Car overheats when sitting in traffic for a long time and with the AC on of course, turning off the AC helps but the water gauge still rises up past the middle level.
Changed the thermostat but after driving for a week the problem occurs again.
I do a lot of highway driving and there is no problem with overheating on highway speeds its just while sitting idle.
Im gonna do the waterpump this weekend, any other suggestions?? Maybe head gasket??
Thanks.

had the same problem with my d16y7... but I ended up swapping it out like 3months later.. never did quit figure out what the problem was...and I changed the theremostat..radiator car..checked fan switch.. everything was a okay.. it was probably a leaky headgasket or something since my coolant would dissapear with no visual signs of leakage

if the fan DOSENT work
it could be (most likley) the coolant temp sensor.
if it DOES work it could be your radiator.

you probably have an air bubble somewhere in your coolant lines. Try bleeding your coolant lines and see if that solves the problem.

Hows the radiator fluid level? Do you have to constantly refill it?? Monitor that if you haven't already.
If that is the case then you probably have a leak somewhere and if there is no visible signs of fluid leak (like small puddles under the car after being parked over night) then its probably the head gasket.
I would also suggest a complete flush of the system. Could be some build up somewhere thats preventing the radiator fluid from flowing properly.
Good Luck!!

Once the engine starts warming up try touching the radiator hoses (top and bottom) to see if both of them are hot. That info would help too.

My first obvious check would be your water pump. Have you checked that? How many clicks you have on the engine? 100+?
