piston ring replacement 5th gen
Im considering replacing my piston rings and I was just wondering if anyone else has done it in a 5th gen and what you thought about the job. What brand/part number did you use. What would you choose in hindsight as well.. the same thing?
I've heard total seal is a good brand but i havent put alot of research into the job yet.

are you replacing them on stock pistons or forged ones...is stock just go with honda oem units cause the ring land is alot weaker than the ring itself and that will go first so a ring wont matter but on forged pistons je and total seals are the best in my opinion
Hey Tabor, sup dude---didn't you replace your piston rings once already at our shop, or was that something else you were having trouble with? I can't remember it's been a long time...

Edit: Yeah, I was going to mention JE myself

I'm also wondering:
when replacing the rings, is it necessary to hone the cylinders? how about balance the rotating assembly? I was told you must balance the assembly for the new pistons...

There was a post on here in the past on the service bulletin on the frm sleeves that the h22a uses. From what i understood from it,unless you have deep scoring or line scratches running up and down the cylinder that can catch your nail very easily you dont need to do any honing. But the rings will need to be broken in though.
Heres my post from a while back......

1990-2001 Prelude – Honing Fiber Reinforced Metal (FRM) cylinders 2000-01 S2000
All S2000 and 1990 and later VTEC and SI Preludes have Fiber-Reinforced Metal (FRM) cylinder liners. FRM honing is not required unless the cylinder has deep vertical scratches that run the length of the bore. Cylinders with light colored spots or flaking cannot be corrected by honing and must be replaced.
To hone FRM liners, perform the following:
· Use a rigid hone (not a ball hone) with GC-600-J or finer stones for nonferrous
metals. The honing pressure should be 200-300 kPa (2-3 kg-cm2, 29-43 psi).
· Use an oil type honing oil.
· Hone at 45-50 rpm to a 60 degree-crosshatch pattern.
· Do not stroke the hone more than 20 cycles.
· After honing, thoroughly clean the engine block of all metal particles by
washing with hot soapy water, then dry and oil them immediately. Never use
solvent; it will only redistribute the grit.
· Some light vertical scoring and scratching is acceptable if it isn’t deep enough
to catch your fingernail, and doesn’t run the full length of the bore. (rm,sn)

Sweet! That's more machine work that i don't have to do! I might (if I can ever keep my money!) be replacing rods/rings/pistons/bearings, so i've been tryin to figure what machinework I need. Thanks for the post
okay cool.. but what kind of piston rings would you recommend? oe with the fmr sleeves?... i would rather use a non oe just because i hate oe stuff lol!
