Default need tech specs on putting on a new h23 head

hey guys i need some help. i just got a decked, ported and polished head with comp valves and springs and 5 angle valve job and a jdm fuel rail and throttlebody. i want to install it myself but i need to know the torque amounts for the head studs? and if it is really worth doing it myself. oh yea and should i get ARP head studs or keep the stock ones. thanks

It is definetly worth doing yourself. I don't have the specs for ya though.

I would invest in the ARP studs since it is not recommended to re-use your stock ones. Some guys get away with it, but it's always better to be safe then sorry. The reason they need to be replaced is due to the 'bolt-stretch' that occurs when torqued. ARP's can be re-used time and time again though.

When inserting the bolts into the head, make sure to coat the threads with the supplied moly-lube. Usually guys just 'hand-tighten' the bolts but to be safe I torque them down to 10ft*lbs to ensure they actually are in there. Sometimes when you hand tighten them you think they are in snug, but they really aren't.

The ARP has a 3 stage torque.
1)30 ft lbs
2)50 ft lbs
3)77 ft lbs

**Stage 3 MIGHT be 70 ftlbs but for some reason I am thinking they are 74 or 77. Call up ARP first to double check. I know the B series are 70...

i take it that this isn't a compicated job then. do the stock head bolts come right out? and will i have to reprogram my ecu because the flow and fuel ratio will be different? i was told that this head will give about 45 extra hp

No, it's not too complicated and yes the headbolts come right out. Just lift off your old head, install the new studs then put the new head on. Yes, studs first, then head. After that, place the washers in place and coat the threads for the nuts to be put on. The most critical part is to set the timing properly.

Your ECU will need more fuel since you have upgraded compression and it will breathe more now. I don't know if it is going to put out 45whp with using an unaltered IM but you will see significant gains. I would say anywhere from 20whp up. The power gains will also highly depend on what type of EMS you plan on using and how aggressive of timing you go with.

i think the im is ported and polished plus its jdm if that makes any diff. and what exactly does the 5 angle valve job do

The JDM throttle body is probably larger then the USDM one is... sorry I do not know much about the JDM/USDM differences. The IM will definetely help you out. Which company did your work?

True power pulleys are good, but don't expect to see HUGE gains from them. Cam gears are also good if you are running stock cams. Keep in mind they are only benificial if tuned on the dyno.

As far as tuning, you need at LEAST a v-afc if you are running the h22a and a s-afc if you are running the h23a.

As far as valve jobs go...

A 5 angle valve job means it is cut into 5 different angles. Usually the top cut is a 3-35 degree, a 45 degree seat angle that also matches the angle on the valve, this is the angle the valve job seals up on. Then you have a 58 to 62 degree bottom cut. sometimes they put a throught cut that would be a 70 degree angle and put a 35 degree backcut on the back of the valve and you have 5 angles.

In lamens terms, the valves are cut at different angles to cuts provide better flow by providing a smoother path of travel for the air.

Some companies also do a 'racing grind valve' cut such as Gude. It is simliar to an 'angle-job' but the valves are ground to the specs that yield the largest velocity of air travel.

i switched my h23a1 TB over to my H22a because i didnt want to mess with the tps sensor but i found out the were the same size!
