Default Leakdown Test

Each cylinder has to be at TDC so i figured the easiest way to do that would be to pop the valve cover at just use the cam gear marks. I know i could just slowly crank the motor by hand and just use a screw driver or something to feel it though the spark plug hole but my question is by doing it with the valve cover off and i creating pressure that is going to blow any oil anywhere and mess something up ?

You won't be creating pressure your actually taking the crankcase pressure away.If you have a loss in pressure and its on the oil side. More then likely you wont be able to see the vapor because its going to be all over the place with the valve cover off. LEAVE THE VALVE COVER ON( the long screwdriver down the sparkplug hole is a very simple and effective way of finding TDC). If your checking for blow by(h series very common) use the dipstick tube. If your checking for a possible coolant system problem, the more common ones are coolant passages or headgasket. Then use radiator cap for a reference point

if your flywheel has timing marks on it you could use that for cylinders 1 and 4.

Doing a leak down test with the valve cover off is no big deal. Oil won't go anywhere.

The best thing to do IMO, is to make sure the cylinder is at TDC by using a long 3/8 extension down the spark plug hole. The cam gears can show TDC at each cylinder, but you can be off a bit before or after TDC. If you're off some, the air pressure can actually cause the engine to rotate, so make sure you are clear of any moving parts when you pressurize the combustion chamber.
