On the right when there starter is kinda, you will see a stamp
h22a1=USDM 4th gen
h22a4=USDM 5th gen
h22a=JDM

If your looking at 300whp.
Almost any good brand kit should handle that.
But t3/t4 should be good.
Get a brand name kit ($2000 new) (600-1000 used)
Cometic head gasket, low compression pistons, bigger injectors, fuel rail, fuel pump.
That should be able to handle 300whp with a good tune.

is it an h22a or an h22a1? an "a" is jdm an "a1" is usdm.... if ur turboing plan to spend quite a bit. turbo is not cheap... u will want to build it low compression i would suggest eagle rods with mahle gold pistons. and a skunk2 everything for ur head (cams, valve springs, cam gears etc.)

Turbo kits are only cheap on Ebay and then "You get what you pay for" comes to mind. So like the guy said above, plan to spend some money.

I looked at it and it looks like they're right. But I'm sure I'm missing something. I always went by the a/a1/ and the color of the Valve Cover.

Yep, you are missing something.

Since you're requiring me to spell it out:

A1 was also used in Canada.
A4 was also used in Australia.

Not to mention that there are 6 other H22s out there, which OP could have.

Have you had any luck with those pistons? I've been doing some research, trying to find reviews on them. Based on what I've read, using these pistons (allegedly safe for FRM) on a turbo build seems to wear down the coating on the piston skirts unusually fast, in about 20k-30k miles, which will then score the cylinder walls.

However, current information on these pistons is very scarce. Do you have experience with them?

You know despite the differences between all the different H22's there are out there with the exception of the type S and SH, it doesn't matter for the goals you set. The differences between 300whp on a jdm h22 or USDM h22 stock for stock would be less than a quarter pound (.25PSI) of boost on just about any turbo. Just get the one that slips by your DMV better.

As for the setup, get a Hondata S300 or another standalone if you choose and make sure your tuner's competent. 300whp is well within the range of 'reliable' for any good running h22. I would argue that building the block for now isn't the best use of money. I also would NOT use any other headgasket aside from OEM if you are going with lower compression pistons. Don't **** with the cylinder/combustion chamber design that Honda engineers worked so hard to put together.

Another way to look at building the block is this, if you can get 300whp now and run it for X amount of miles before it blows up, when it does blow up you'll be building the block anyways (which will cost the same in the future as it will now). Buy yourself the time now and build a trashed block on the side or wait for your block to turn to trash.

Here's my words of wisdom in terms of parts to get:
Hondata S300
Garrett/Precision/BorgWarner/Holset/turbonetics(their new design) turbo
RC/Injector Dynamics/Siemens/ (namebrand) injectors
eBay/crap/whatever FMIC
eBay/crap/whatever charge pipes
eBay/crap/whatever couplers/clamps
TiAl /Precision/TurboSmart wastegate
HKS/Greddy/Synchronic/TiAl/ blow-off valve
cast log manifold (if its cast, it'll most likely hold 300whp for a long time)
whatever downpipe, doesn't matter.

i personally dont have them. a good friend of mine does. he has 400 wheel with an h22a. hes put a hard 20k on it and its runn pretty good besides a few small issues...
