headers or not
what's up guys i am ready to spend some money and need some help. I want to do the cai, cams, pulleys etc . I hear that dc headers don't give much hp and i don't feel like putting out a G for a mugen. can i get everything else and use the stock header or is that pointless, what will happen is it bad if i do that
thanks
thanks
If you're REALLY planning on going the whole N/A route (I think that rabbit hole goes A LOT deeper than you realize, but that's another story), then you're not going to want to have a bottleneck in there holding your engine back from it's full potential. That means doing everything else and leaving the stock header is NOT an option.
What I will leave you with is this: it's better to get what you REALLY want in the beginning than half-*** it and regret it later. I wasted tons of money on lots of other stuff (stereos, alarms, perf. mods) for like 4-5 other cars before I learned that lesson...Yeah, the good stuff costs like hell, but why buy something now that you'll just end up selling on eBay later?!? Get what you want the 1st time, you'll be broke but at least you won't be sorry.
It took me forever to save up for my header, but I'm happy now that I've got it...

Check out the headers by other computers such as the Prospeed/Elite Custom Race Header offered by http://www.prospeed-performance.com.
Or maybe SMSP and others, etc.

I have heard that the 99+ Preludes have a good header right out of factory and that is more than enough.. is this true? That the pre-99 year 5th gen (97-99) models had a slightly different/more restrictive design?
I also want that Mugen
but saving up for it is such a pain.. I dont think I'll bother changing the header if my stock header is good. Mine is a 99 Prelude btw. So when they say 99+ does it include 99? hmm.. I am so confused..

There is no such thing as a stock honda part or component being more than enough.
SMSP, Mugen or a modified Greddy would be my order of consideration.
Does the Mugen have a 2.5" collector? Or is it 2.3? ~60mm?

From the initial dynos that I've seen, I think that when they get them completely done and in production they're going to be hard to beat. I got scared away from them somewhat in the beginning because their 1st few 5th gen designs had some fitment issues with the crossmember, but Dave said that he's worked all of those kinks out now.
I believe it's definitely going to be one to watch, I was just too impatient to wait...

if anyone cares, I will try to show a before + after dyno upon adding the SMSP header + 2.5" custom exhaust.
if anyone is interested let me know, otherwise i wont waste change on one dyno run

The difference in weight (between stock and aftermarket) alone is almost worth the money. But seriously, even the 5th gen stock header is really restrictive compared to an aftermarket unit. Especially in the collector area.
