Icon2 head bolts...

can some one explain to me why my head bolts(from looking at them still holding the head to the block) they actualy look like bolts, and like apr head bolts look like threaded studs on both ends? how are u suposed to tighten them down?

Thats due to the ARP being head STUDS not bolts. You tighten them down with a hex wrench, to proper spec, then put the head on and tighten the nuts to proper stretch and torque specs.

ahhhh. now it makes sence.. so apr offers a stud design that eliminates the less effiecnt standerd bolt design. and uses a hex on the top of the stud.

see the pics u see online for them u dont see the hex part on top, so im like well wtf? i imagin that apr provides the new nuts as well

noww maybe i can get me a impact or something to get my head bolts off. how tight are they suposed to be b/c last weekend i had a littel accident trying to get them off with hand tools, should i be able to use hand tools b.c the motor is at my storage unit and theres no out lets so i cant get a compressor in there but maybe a battery powered impact?

(hopefuly this time with out gashing my finger open and needing stiches again, thats what happend last weekend :[)

thanks guys for clearing that up for me

On an engine thats out of the car I just lay the motor on its side then i arrange the ratchet so I can just push down towards the floor. You can even kneel on the block to help hold it in place.
My ratchet for this is a 24 inch long 1/2 inch drive snap-on

Safety note; push the ratchet with your hand open and flat to the floor so your fingers don't get mashed between the handle and the floor.

DO NOT USE AN IMPACT TO TAKE OFF THE HEAD BOLTS.

Use an impact grade socket and a BIG breaker bar. And make sure you loosen them per Helms specs

They should be nuts, on myne they were nuts on a threaded bar and they were so stuck that the bar came out with the nuts, I then split the nuts, returned the bars into the block and bought new nuts.

^ the "bar" you're talking about is called a stud. somebody had obviously replaced them at some point in your motor's life. there are different specs for re-torquing a stud, fyi.

spoonhonda.com; sounds like a browser problem. i will argue that a good hardcopy from helm's is still valuable, though. being able to have it right next to you when you're working on the car and not getting greasy fingers all over your computer is definitely nice.
helminc.com is where to buy.
