Default Head bolts or studs?

Whats the difference between the two, I always assumed that bolts were for heads on V shapped motors, and studs were on 4 bangers. Can you get head bolts for honda's?

Studs are like bolts w/o the head part. Looks like a bolt that's threaded at both ends. Honda motors all use (so far as I know) studs. That way you can preload the threads in the block with a little bit of tention w/o putting too much non-sheer stress on the aluminum threads of the block when you're tightening the head down. Sorry if I'm not using the correct terms, but thats' my understanding of it anyway.

Replacing the factory head bolts with studs is common because the studs offer better load distribution and clamping force.

As Corky Bell said, "A stud is an engineer's design. A bolt is a marketing compromise."

Head "bolts are oem fromt he factory.....people doing buildups or going for high HP tend to wanna use studs because they are a stronger application

I've never seen a factory honda motor with studs. That said I've pulled apart a few D's and see the insides of a few B's. None of them had studs as stock. As someone explained they allow you to get better clamping because they're not shear loading the aluminum threads and instead are applying the shear stress to the nuts on top. Much better as the studs are made of some very high strength alloys.

When you're running a lot of boost this can stop the head from lifting from the block and subsequently blowing a head gasket.
