Default Gas Gauge

hey, i have a '98 and i've been having problems with my gas gauge, everything is fine once i fill it up and it seemingly reads correctly when it's "full" but the gauge drops REALLY quickly and really inaccurately, i know that i'm not burning as much gas as it reads, i'll even not drive it for a day, get in it and it dropped some more, not to mention i got in my car one night and the gas gauge went up almost a whole 1/4 tank. i know that honda gas gauges fluctuate quite a bit, but i'm wondering if there is something seriously wrong. i talked to a friend of mine who is a tech at a honda dealership and he said that besides it possibly being the sending unit, he's not really sure. if anyone has any ideas or info that'll help i'd appreciate it. otherwise looks like i'll be going by the trip meter.
