cleaning engine?
hey..im wondering how would i go about cleaning my engine?..im told taht theres a special formula type liquid to clean it..im not sure. Im wondering if theres a way to just the engine with home materials..?
I use FOAMY engine brite. You'll need about 2 cans of the stuff to do a really nice job.
I'll give you my "protocol":
Remove battery
Cover up dist cap with plastic shopping bag, making sure to take care in covering up everything tightly, so that nothing comes in contact with water.
Foam down the whole engine, spray it every where.
Let soak for a couple minutes, use a brush on the really dirty areas.
Rinse with a very, very gentle stream of water
Replace battery
Spray armor-all on all the hoses etc
Close the hood
Start-up , and let run for 5-10 minutes.
It's going to smell for a while, but that's normal. Also, only use the FOAMY engine brite; the regular STINKS something aweful, and is very flammable. Which , in the engine bay = bad.
Good luck, and if you follow these instructions, and something bad happens, I'm not responsible. Use at your own risk.

Another method is to use Simple Green and a hose - just cover all the electrical stuff (ie distributer, etc.). Taking the battery out is a good idea.
I suggest not using Armor All for the hoses. It will eat the rubber and cause premature wear. Also it can burn. I suggest Meguiars Vinyl and Rubber #40.

I always clean my engine bay with steam. They're really not to expensive and it doesn't involve chemicals. That's what most of the dealerships do to dress an engine and clean it up.! I suggest buying a steamer because you can make some good money also if you're into detailing engine bays or cleaning up old factory wheels that have grime that is very hard to remove without a lot of heat!
