Default The amazing exploding distributor (pics on the way)

well yesterday i was on the way home from the autoparts store just picking up some oil and i came to a stop at a stop sign. so knowing me i can't resist vtec, so i pulled all the way thru 1st then right as i shifted and layed back into it the car bogged hard for like half a second , then just picked right back up like nothing happend.

so heres the story.. i was alittle concerned about the bog, so when i got home i poped the hood to take a look, nothin abnormal until i see the distributer cap with like a 3 inch long crack in it bulging out!!

so i immediatly took the ditributer cap off, and come to find out what really happen was that the screw that holds the rotor on came loose and fell out, then was slammed into CYP sensor embeding itself half way in it which then caused the sensor to burst open and crack my distributer cap.

so tottal damage:

1 uber fucked rotor screw
inner sheild DESTROYED
rotor is all messed up from wabbling free
Cap has a fairly large crack in it
metal peice (looks kinda like a camlobe) in the distributer was shered off from the screw bouncing around
CYP sensor is totaly gone (well maybe its still good if i can remove the screw thats firmly implanted in it HA!)

and the weird part is that i replaced my rotor and cap over 2 years ago and haen't been anywhere near that part of the distributer in that 2 years and it decideds to let go now.

yeah i put that screw in very right 2 YEARS ago, i have no idea why it came loose..

but im hoping to not have to replace the whole distributer assembly. i have a friend that works at a honda dealership that says honda sells them peices of the distributer so you don't have to buy a whole replacement

i will have the pics up tonight..

I had almost the same story. While redlining on 3rd gear on highway my engine suddenly went off. I suspected a valve meet with the piston, but later on it appeared that rotor broke on pieces (Italian made **** ) and crashed cap and shield. I was actually happy that damage was not so painful for my pocket.

yeah i wasn't so nervious because mine just bogged for a second and kept on going. and i didn't see a CEL because it was already on because in my f22/vtec i have no knock sensor and im still runing the stock p13..

but amazingly i put some of the peices back together after i removed the screw from the CYP sensor and IT STARTS!!! but throws a CEL immediatly probably the CYP sesor that is now officially fuxored. still need new parts, there is no way i can drive it the way it is now.

Some one told me that you dont even have to put that screw back in place if you dont want to. Im gonna be changing my rotor soon and i dont plan on putting the screw back in if its not needed. Anyone else heard this?

Actually what keeps the rotor intact is the pressure aplied by the cap. The rotor screw does scure it, but ive heard of people just not putting it back. Its like how does the rotor stay on after the screw falls out anyways? Its the screw flying around that caused the damage, not the rotor. I dont want to be the first to try this ofcourse, but im just trying to clear this up. It seems like every time someone takes out that screw and put it back in, it comes loose...
