89 Prelude si mod ideas
recently bought an 89 prelude si, what should I mod first? It has a light weight fly wheel but other than that no performance parts. I don't want to rice it up just give it some more power and make it look clean.

custom 2.5" exhaust from the downpipe collector back (meaning ditch the stock cat for a universal 2.5" high flow) will make the biggest gains. coupled with a decent header will help a bit more too. make sure you get a 2.5" flex pipe installed though or you'll constantly be breaking exhaust parts. if you get a header that has that stupid ball socket (pacesetter) cut that thing off and install a flex pipe in its place.
next would be a b21a1 90-91 prelude Si exhaust cam, but keep the b20a5 intake cam. and last, a true cai, which is typically custom made.
the above is about as far as you can go on the stock ecu. unless you want to pull the engine apart, you can have the block bored for stock (new or used) b21a1 pistons, which will bump the displacement up 0.1L, and will bring compression from 9.0:1 to 10.0:1 for a chunk of power, but you'll need to use 89 or 91 octane at all times.
a tune will squeeze some additional power out of the above setup, as well as a huge gain in gas mileage. and any further mods would REQUIRE a tune. remember, to tune you need a tuneable ecu, and a conversion harness that is specific to the 3g prelude, as it is NOT wired the same as other obd0 hondas. you do not need to swap distributors though, our cars have obd1 electronics from the factory, just obd0 ecu.
cams, high comp pistons, custom intake manifolds, and much more would be the next steps. very few people go that far though.

Yup, thats about it on the NA side.
Above that will cost you a pretty penny to make more power out of a B20a5.
Boost or H/F swap are you only other real power options after that.
If interested in going down that H/F swap then contact me: 1funryd@comcast.net
