Default first oil change - necessary to go to a dealer?

before getting my brand new honda fit this year, i've been driving a salvaged 1987 acura integra until i junked it. since i've never had a car with computerized gizmos, i was wondering if it's necessary to go to a dealer for my oil change - does the computer have to be reset?

i prefer to do it myself or go to my mechanic instead of going to the dealer. after experiencing how horrible dealers were while i was getting my car, i'm not thrilled about visiting them... thanks in advance for your replies.

Definately do the oil change yourself. I wouldn't trust the dealership with a branch I picked up from my front yard.

They tried to give me a free oil change + free gas. I declined. I got my vehicle and I'm never going back, unless if there's a warranty issue.

yes the computer that tracks oil usage needs to be reset however the owners manual outlines a procedure that you can do yourself without going to the dealer....follow the steps and change your own oil

On Honda's you are supposed to change the oil drain plug washer at each oil change. Most oil change places and independent shops never do this, and the plugs end up seeping oil. Almost everyone I see that has been reused seeps. Atleast buy a handful of drain plug washers and tell your mechanic to change it when you get your oil changed. They are about $0.30 a piece at the dealership parts department. Reset the maintenance light at each oil change too.

I gotta say though. When I was helping my friend changing his oil, the filter was such a ^%%$%#$ to get out. Plus I didn't have the exact Honda filter wrench. But good luck.

Remember no fram filters

I always use a wrench to tighten it and never had any problems removing it by hand.
