Questions about exhaust/burnt valves
Okay I don't really understand how it works but I hear that when you run your car without exhaust (from the header back), you can burn your valves, I don't understand what this is or how it happens someone please explain.
How do I adjust my valves also. Is adjustment really necessary?

Re: Questions about exhaust/burnt valves (Veil_Side_)
Basically, the header absorbs a shitload of heat from the head around the exhaust ports. With no header, **** will get -real- hot, -real- quick. The vavles and valve seats will expand/warp and wont seal correctly. Combustion gasses leaking past the valves is not good, and it will quickly deteriorate from there. In extreme cases, pieces of the valves can chip or break off. There is a much more detailed explanation, but that about sums it up.
Do a search on adjusting your valves. YES you should adjust them. If they are set too loose, you will get noise and they wont open enough. Too tight, and they wont seal: burnt valve waiting to happen.

old V8 info..........
people would run in motors with no headers or exhaust manifolds. During the valve overlap period, the way colder air would hit the exhaust valves and cause them to warp.
As long as you have headers or exhaust manifolds, you are ok.
I'll take a 70 Buick GSX Stage 1 and judt a little torque.
510 lb/ft (underated) from the factory.
So would a 415/427 SBC in the 86 TA

Re: Questions about exhaust/burnt valves
Running at high load/high rpm with misadjusted valves caused the demise of my D16A6...do it yourself or pay the dealership $75, beats buying a new engine and tranny as the result of a dropped valve and spring.
