Default piston ring gap question

Well guys I ditch my b20 project and sold mos tthe stuff to upgrade my d series motor and keep it a sleeper....I was wondering how hard it is to gap the rings on these things...like last time I followed the owners manual and I had blow by.....do the rings really matter how they are spaced out...need help so i can hop in installing some new 8.5 srp pistons....thanks

well its easy all u need is a feeler gauge and a drimel put the rings in the cyl and use the feeler gauge to check the gap..if you need to gap them take the drimel and put in in a vise sideways and gring down the ring by running the drimel between the gap apply equal pressure on both sides as u gring.do a little at a time.hope that helps

Yes it does matter. You wanna make sure they are gaped to spec. Also you want to make sure your cylinders are round. Best bet is to take it to a machine shop and let them hon it for you. They also need to be across from one another (the rings). Maybe this will help. It is for a B18 but you gap the rings the same.

my bad didnt mean gapping them, I meant how do you insert them to spec....like one ring one way and one the other way....I wasnt talking about gapping rings for nitrous or anything just how to install them std way...

true! cause if the walls are just slightly egg shaped it will have blow-by i would get it hon out too before u install the rings.

yes... i will be honing it .20 over for my new pistons...i not worried about that I am worried how to set the new rings in...dont they have to face a difft way???...I had a problem with facing them the right direction....but I thought the rings move around inside the motor???

You have to face the across from one another. Any auto rebuild book will show you that.

see I got that..I think I was having a tought time doing the middle ones where there is 2 rings in one....how do I set those...and yes I just bought a book but its in the mail....my old book fell apart after the rain got to it by mistake....please inform me on how to set the rings on the middle one...

I see what your saying. You are talking about the oil rings. I will find out for you. I was wondering the same thing my self. I think you will set them across like the others. Kinda like a 4 corners thing, each one across from the other. But like I said, I will check this out today and get back to you.
