Fuel gauge not working correctly - flucates between correct reading and F
I have a 89 CRX DX and for the past 2 months, my fuel gauge fluctuates randomly. It will read correctly for about 5 minutes then shoot up to F, back and forth.
I searched on the topic and I found the most common problems were bad fuel level sender or bad gauge. I took out the sender unit and tested the resistance between the two terminals using an ohmeter and it reads okay. As for the gauge, I jumped the two terminals on the sender and turned the ignition on, and there is voltage plus it moves to F.
What else could I check that could be wrong?
Sucks not knowing how much gas I have

I have also started having this problem recently. The best way to tell is just fill up your tank and reset your tripometer. I know I get about 200 miles on a full tank then I'm down to 1/4 so I just fill it up. But if anybody knows how to fix his problem I would be interested to know too.

remove the cluster and check for loose connections / shorts in the wiring. also look for any piece of the conductor film thingy that may be touching.
guage = F @ 12v, so its getting to much voltage.

Re: (crx_88_si)
Ok heres a kinda late update on the fuel gauge situation. I took the fuel sender (float) out of the gas tank and measured the resistance, and its within specs. I also tested the gauge, and it too is within specs.
I also removed the cluster and didn't see anything unusual, other than one cut wire from when I had glow gauges 3 years ago. I taped it up good, but the gauge still shoots up to F.
Any other suggestions?

Re: (goforbroke)
I searched and searched and someone recommended taking the temp/gas gauge out and looking at the copper wire movement on the back of the gauge. There are a few strands that are not wound tightly against the main copper ball. However I didn't see any broken strands.
What would you guys recommend replacing first, the temp/fuel gauge or the sending unit?
Again, both tested okay, but the gauge moves randomly even when I'm driving on a flat steady surface, which makes me think its the gauge thats bad.
