Default fuel gauge issue

i recently purchase a crx last month+. i got it with a half tank and drove it out to get rid of the old gasoline. gauge shows that im pass E but when i fill up, taps off at 9 gallons. from factory spec my tank is about 12 gallons. i usually leave my key turn so that my gauge will increase while pumping. it stops 3/4 the way but after start up, gauge goes all the way to the top. so im guessing that the gauge could be malfunctioning? or maybe my gas tank? or fuel pump?

You'll want to check the fuel level unit. You check the resistance across the left two of the three terminals of the unit with the float in various positions- lowest position for empty tank reading, mid and top positions. Empty reading is 105-110, half reading is 25.5-39.5 and full reading is 2-5 (Ohms). Also make sure the float is moving freely.
