Sup homies, recently i got a 88 honda civic, dx 5 spd and i was wondering why the shifting is so hard on it. It goes into gear, but with effort. The tranny has new oil and eveything. The car has 200xxx miles along with the tranny, while the engine was rebuild 50 thousand ago. Searching brought up nothing.

Does the tranny grind or not go into gear ever?

Has it always been hard, is it getting worse?

Have you checked things like your clutch cable, shift linkage etc?

the clutch cable and shift linkage seem fine. It grinds if you put it in 3rd fast, and it always grinds when putting it in reverse. Does not matter how fast or slow it always does it. I got it a week ago, it was parked for 4 months before. Shifting did not get better within this week.

I have the exact same problem with my rebuilt Si tranny (about 30k old with new fluid twice in 1 month).

First is especially hard requiring me to sometimes tap the gas with the clutch in to get it to "pop" into gear. Reverse always grinds so I just clutch in/slap it into reverse before starting the car. 3rd grinds going into gear but it otherwise fine after in gear. Tranny does not pop out of gear.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of a bent shiftfork. Has nothing to do with the linkage or clutch adjustment. My solution = new tranny...hopefully soon. Yours may differ .

clutch/Pressure plate, Ive seen this happen several times. Good luck

check the bearing in the bottom of the shifter, i had that problem with my integra
--also always go int 2nd gear then reverse it will never grind again 2nd and R are on the same syncro's

any idea, on how to soften up the ride. The FAQ does really help me. Don't want to change the whole suspension.

I was under the impression that reverse had no synchro's.

Theres not much choice here, but your car will ride better with more weight in it. When its heavier it is less perturbed by road corrugations compared to a lighter car.

sound like a worn out pressure plate or clutch disk .

heres some more info, the car could be off and it still will go in gear hard. I don't think it has to do with the clutch, since the engine is not rotating.
