A) What lube are people using in their gearboxes? Engine oil as the Fine Manual says, or?
B) Where exactly are the plugs? I assume the one visible from below is the drain, but where is the fill/level port hiding?

i recommend 2 qts of honda MTF. even the new stuff which is designed for higher mpg and thus thinner. its advanced compared to just throwing motor oil in. the shop manual specifies motor oil because there wasnt MTF before... and motor oil quality (additives, chemical contents and what not) arent the same then as they are now.

use the proper oil meant for transmissions.

The fill bolt is a 17mm hex above the 3/8 square bolt head drain plug, also close to the axle. I HIGHLY recommend using a 6pt CLOSED END or box end 17mm wrench. It is always a right bolt and will strip easily and there's no room for a socket. So a good tight fitting wrench will save you from headaches. And a good swift push, not kick, will the foot will torque it off. Or use a cheater wrench by locking another wrench onto the 17mm to get more leverage.

Thanks, I'll have to find a 17mm 6-point box wrench before jacking up the car......

I got the MTF from Amazon @ $10/quart.
I purchased a 6-point box, and had no problems getting the fill plug loose. The drain was a little harder.
I used a hand pump & put in all but 10% of the 2nd bottle.

I'm off tomorrow to get replacement hood hinge from Civic Duty in Annapolis; the pivot cracked into two.

you can use 10-30 and it'll do fine.
Honda says not to use synthetic, the redline is synthetic. But I see a lot of posts of people using it.
You can use honda mtf and no one will really disagree with this.
I prefer GM or penzoil synchromesh. Though some people say this will shorten the life of your gears
