2002 CRV - A/C Problem
I replaced the compressor and evaporator 1 year ago myself and A/C has run great until the other day. I had to really get on the gas hard to get out into traffic and suddenly the A/C started going in and out.
There was also intermitent hissing coming from the compressor like it was ejecting freon. I let the car rest a feew hours and it was working fine again. Then it happened again after a few minutes of driving.
3 things that I have observed are
- with car parked and on, If I rev the rpms to 3000 the compressor will start to hiss and spit
- viewing the a/c cluth while the A/C is running it never seems to stop spinning - doesn't seem to cycle on and off
- used my gauges to test a/c system pressure and it was in the normal range.
Any ideas or input is greatly appreciated,
Chad

Re: 2002 CRV - A/C Problem
I have similar problems with my 2006 at 198K miles on the original components. My solution for the time being is to turn off the AC on the freeway onramp. My hissing sounds more like dripping or sputtering. System is not over or under pressure. I'm thinking it's the clutch packs or the compressor failing, but I'm waiting for it to go catastrophically or reproducibly at this point before I do anything. It has been this way for almost two years.
The CRV does disable the AC under abnormally heavy loads on purpose, FYI. I just don't like it being out that long, so shutting it off preemptively gets me by.

Have heard that Honda made a poor design with the AC system on the CRV
And many times around 80k miles, it will fail. Usually it will be the AC clutch.
When replacing the AC compressor, do you have to give it a charge of compressor oil?
Or does the AC compressor come with it already?

Re: 2002 CRV - A/C Problem
The only problem I came across with my crv is the clutch plate wares and it doesn’t every accually ever engages: it a simple fix. Just remove the nut in the center of the clutch plate and remove the small washer behind the plate. Them put it back together. If the plate is to far away the magnet can,t pull it in. If you look closely it try’s to engage but backs off. Good luck
