Default zex cam on d16y8

considering getting a zex camshaft for my d16y8. so far its all stock, and im planning on getting the edelbrock turbo kit and i keep hearing how good they are together. just wondering if the stage 2 cam is overkill for my setup right now. i know it'll have a weird idle, but is it even streetable with no other tuning? if not, then i'll just get the stage 1 cam and wait it out.

def go with the stage 2 don't waste your time or money on stage 1, but im not sure tho, how well this cam is going to work with turbo, i had this cam on my y8 and loved it. I've heard of some one making 205 whp with that cam only boosting to 6psi.. so this might be good for turbo, not exactly sure, but for all mota it's a GREAT cam good luck keep us posted

I have this cam in my y8. So far I am very pleased with it except for the trouble with getting the cam timing set correctly. It makes great power though and from what i've heard from people works exceptionally well with a turbo setup. I'm not sure if it will make a whole lot of power though without any breathing mods such as i/h/e. Also an adjustable cam gear is a MUST

In my opinion, if you plan on getting a turbo kit, get a turbo cam.

Crower Stage 2 Turbo cam for the D16.

spade any idea how much power that crower cam will make on a turbo car? I made a thread on using the zex cam and a couple people reported about making over 20whp extra with the zex cam. They also said the cam helped spool the turbo much faster.

I can say the advantage over a N/A cam will be greater, however I do not know how much more.

Ball park guess is about 10% more than a N/A cam of same equivalent specs.

We will find out soon enough, the Edelbrock Civic is gettings its new tranny(carbon coated syncros own), LSD, clutch and flywheel this weekend. I think it will have the Crower turbo cam in a couple months or so.

K, so i ordered the stage 2 cams already, and i did some research on cam gears and i'm finding that skunk2 is getting the best reviews. one quick question, where should i set it, considering my car will be all stock except for the cams and gear?

0 degrees until you spend some time on the dyno.

Thats not a stock cam so it is made for great performance at 0 degrees.

MAKE SURE you get a cam gear for the D16Y8! There is about a 3 degree difference between the Z6 and Y8.

actually a z6 cam gear will work perfectly fine. The y8 cam gear's keyway is about 4 or 5 degrees advanced from the z6 cam gear's keyway so technically with a y8 gear you would have to retard the cam timing 5 degrees to get the cam to 0. With the z6 gear the keyway is already lined up so technically you should be able to get 0 degrees at 0 degrees on the cam gear....however this is probably not the case with this cam because it really just needs to be degreed to find out where the actual 0 mark is. Some people have even found their zero mark on a z6 head at 5-9 degrees advanced! Put it this way...on my car with the camgear set to 0(technically where 0 should be) I can only get 6 degrees of ignition timing with my dizzy fully advanced...so that definantely can't be right. I finally ended up leaving it at 4 degrees advanced because with that I have about 18 degrees of ignition timing with the dizzy fully advanced. I figure the actual 0 mark is probably around 5 or 6 degrees advanced with it in my car because when its set there I can get around 20-22 degrees of ignition timing with the dizzy fully advanced which seems about right, plus this range of 4-6 degrees advanced cam timing is where my car seems to run the best with the cam.

Here is a link to a post I made on the d series board that will probably clear some of this up for you

I am putting a y8 head on my y5 bottom and I thought if you set number 1 piston at the top and then set the cam at vertical where it says up then it should be close to time. If I am wrong then please let me know because I am a noob when it comes to timing. I fanyone has a good write up on changing a cam and putting it in time or doing a head swap and putting it in time that would be great. I have a zex cam with an unorthodox gear so what should I do. Thanks
