WTF is wrong with my car?
OK, we got the starter turning, motor cranks over. Thats about it. Coolant fans work, interior lights work, power everything works.
However....
CEL light...doesn't work....Oil light....doesn't work....battery light works.....dash panel lights work, headlights, tailights, corner bulbs, all flash...dizzy turns, plugs spark, timing is fine, getting fuel, fuel pump turns on, new battery.....
any way to check and see if it's the computer? I mean one of us hooked the battery up backwards (hey its a team project....), and smoke started to pour out from somewhere under the dash.
It couldn't be the main relay, because then the car wouldn't turn over at all right?
Anyway, Im thinking its the ecu, so I took the cover off, no burns or anything, even though whoever put the last chip in did a messy *** soldering job...maybe when it was hooked up backwards it melted the solder??
I at least need the CEL light so I can check for codes, but any ideas? Muchos gracias pour advances hombres.

Sounds like the problem right there. Have you looked at the harness to see if it's okay? In other words, did you find where the smoke was coming from?

If I'm not mistaken the car will crank even if the main relay is fried; you just won't be getting any fuel, so the car won't start.

Yeah, that is possible.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's not the main relay, just wanted to double check. I know the cars getting fuel cause the plugs had gas on them when they were pulled after to check for spark.
As far as the ecu, I'm not too sure where the smoke was coming from. It was hooked up backwards for like a minute , and after that the panel clock never came back on. But i was pushing in the clutch when i noticed it, and all the carpeting, dash plastic was still in place, but it was definitely coming from inside the car.
I took the ecu out, and the motor would still turn over, the harness was fine before I swapped the motor in, i mean no adjustments or anything were made to it.

Oh boy. Battery in backwards can melt the ENTIRE wiring harness, I have physically seen this before. Its a pain, but get a multimeter, and check EVERY wire to make sure everything is ok.
