Though yours is a '96, It might still have this same problem.

The return switch breaks inside the wiper motor. I had this happen on my ;98 and the install is really easy. I think we pried them out using a small flathead, but I could be wrong. The middle clip is the hardest to remove because the other holes in the chassis are rectangular (the clip ends are square) and the middle hole is square. So it's a tight fit. I had to buy a new one, and you might want to be prepared to pick one up too. The car will assemble fine without that clip though. It just got on my nerves.

Here is the TSB (PDF).

I got a replacement motor from eBay. I think it was like $25 shipped. It was from a 2000 model if I recall. Its' worked every since too.

If you check out that TSB, it's a really easy install. Just make sure you mark where the linkage and motor are compared to each other! If you don't you might end up having wipers that work backwards.

I already had it happen on my car. The instructions didn't mention it and we didn't even think about it.

So when we got it all back together the wipers would turn on and just go "CLUNK" and barely move. Then we moved the arms all the way up and the wiped from the top down instead.
