will a 92 dx tranny work in 96 hx? (both automatic)
Hey, I dont know a lot about transmissions. A 96 civic hx automatic needs a new tranny. I have a 92 dx w/ auto tranny. Will the 92 auto work in the 96?
One thing I do not know about is if there will be any issues in putting a tranny from OBD1 civic into an OBD2.
Also not sure if the gearing will be the same.
I know automatics suck, but this is just going to be a daily driver while I work on my 92 hatch (5 speed swap on the way .
thanks for any advice

All D series tranny's are interchangeable. I know a guy that put a 96 HX motor on top of his stock auto tranny in a 92.
Automatics don't suck. Especially the 92-95. I just got a 91 Civic Si and I can tell you that clutch sucks!!!!!!

are the auto hx's the CVT transmission? I can't remember if it was all 96 HX's or if it was just some.
could I just replace a CVT tranny w/ standard automatic?

easiest thing for you to do is convert to a 5 speed. Is a lot of work but the cvt's are soo expensive and you also have the same crappy transmission. Honda should issue a recall but then it's not saftety related so they probabally won't. Yes the cvt sucks *** and honda totally missed it on that one. Good thing mine was a 5 speed when I got it. Any 92-00 d series 5 speed will work. Although I would reccommend a 96-00 ex tranny. You could buy the 5 speed tranny and do the conversion for cheaper than what the cvt will cost. Do a search it's been talked alot before.

Yeah the CVT does suck for reliability. But if you could put a 5 speed in there, then you could put a regular automatic in there.
It's funny that you say Honda automatics suck because the opposite is true. If you knew anything about automatics you'd know that Honda made theirs unique, and that it's made similar to manual transmissions. It's very unusual to damage any hard parts due to it's design, you just need upgraded clutch packs which are available in the aftermarket for the D series for the same price as standard clutch packs. Turbocharge an automatic and enjoy the benefits of quicker spooling and steady boost due to torque multiplication and the fact that the auto is always in gear between shifts. In the 92-95 Civic, you are given control of all four gears so that it is possible to do everything you can do with a manual except force an early upshift, and without the need for a crutch I mean clutch.
The myth that Honda automatics are weak comes from idiots who abuse or purposely destroy their auto trans before converting to stick. Most auto trans rebuilders are familiar with the "launch of death", where you rev it up in neutral and drop it into gear, very common to idiot Honda Civic owners with aftermarket tail lights.
So if you're going to say something negative about Honda automatic transmissions, back it up with something other than anecdotal evidence otherwise you're just talking smack and perpetuating false information.

I think he meant 93ejay1, I thought he meant me at first but I read my post and I only had said the cvt sucked. Honda 5 speeds hold up a lot better than the automatics, why do you think you see so many people converting from an auto to a manual? Yes maybe they would hold up better if people didn't neutral drop them and drove them right, also he talks about upgrading the tranny... yes it's gonna hold up better beefing it up but we was talking about a stock tranny with no modifications done. I still stand by my other post and if it was my car I'd swap a in 5 speed but it's your car not mine.
