-- Wierd 3rd Gear Grindage! Need some advice  --
So when I drive regularly, 3rd gear goes in pretty good. But then when I shift to 3rd from 5k RPM, when the stick goes into 3rd gear, it grinds
Any advice on what it could be? And what to replace/fix.
Thanks HT <3 <3

you'd better save up some money. your 3rd gear synchro is worn and ready to be replaced. usually, the labor will cost you about 400 and the parts are dependant on what else is worn. i wouldn't suggest doing it yourself. its not fun taking a honda transmission apart. you could also just change your transmission to something more favorable and maybe save some money.

What kind of fluid do you have in there? when was the last time it was changed?
How many miles on the car? How many miles on the clutch?

Try changing the fluid. Also try double clutching into 3rd, it will help you bypass the problem a bit.
How is your shifter, is it pretty loose? if so that sometimes can cause grind.

Ill change the fluid and see what happends from there.... also the shifter is actually pretty hard, going into gears and even the clutch is hard.
Feels like im in my Dad's manual truck driving that poor LS lol!

Might be an isolated case... But I think LS trannies are kinda weak...
My roomates 98 LS w/ 80,000 miles went from grinding gears to a 2" gash in the casing in only a week.

I hear ya. Might as well just buy an old LS tranny and throw it in huh?
should run about 200 bucks?

I really recomend redline MTL but some people say it causes premature bearing wear... I don't really agree with this but I only have my experiences...
LOTS of racers and shops recomend Redline MTL.
I had some tranny probs and it cleared it right up... tranny sounded like it was about to go and it lasted for near 100k after that... now still all thats wrong with it is the input shaft bearing... and it has 205k miles on it all tolled so I'd say Redline DEFINATELY was worth it's initial cost.
GM/Penzoil Synchromesh is more commonly available and also good. You want in the 75/90 Range I believe.

my last car (98 integra gsr) did that and i had my transmission fluid changed with Royal Purple Synchromesh and installed a skunk2 short shifter and the change in feel was amazing, it went into all the gears so much easier. the third gear still grinded a little but not near as bad. Double clutching will synchro the gears for you so ur worn down 3rd gear synchro doesnt f**k ur tranny. thats about all you can do w/out replacing the synchro or tranny

Yes it is... Most likely because they had not contracted a producer for a REAL manual transmission oil... so they defaulted to the Oil..
It's NOT a good thing to run engine oil in a trans... it will work but it's DEFINATELY not ideal.
Chances are any newer version of that trans calls for Honda MTL.
